Safety Specialist
LOCATIONBedford Park, IL (Argo Plant)
REPORTS TOSafety Manager
What You Will Do- Develop and deliver pertinent safety training (Permit training, STOP, LOTO, safety training fair, etc.). Manage, plan and execute Safety Month activities.
- Maintain contractor safety files and collect/categorize safety compliance data.
- Provide update/upkeep of the MSDS libraries and the Argo Plant Emergency Action plan manuals, as necessary.
- Review all Incident Investigations, participate in root cause analysis meetings and ensure appropriate follow‑up on corrective actions.
- Direct the plant security program, procedures and personnel to ensure access control procedures are sufficient to provide for the physical security of plant assets; perform periodic review of security post orders with Security Manager. Maintain all aspects of the Plant Card Access Security System.
- Lead/coordinate/execute monthly contractor safety meeting.
- Coordinate and plan shutdown activities as it relates to contractor entry and traffic; ensure site safety and food safety requirements are met prior to entry.
- Participate in safety audits as required.
- Compile and distribute monthly reports to corporate.
- Provide support to the Manager, Safety and Security. Perform special projects and other miscellaneous duties as required.
- Coordinate plant‑wide emergency drills, in conjunction with the Manager, Safety and Security.
- Coordinate and participate in unit mock-OSHA inspections. Participate as a member of the Site Wellness Committee, Accident Investigation Team, Safety Committee Team and Plant Crisis Management team.
- Engage employees in site safety process (STOP and safety committee involvement), including increased involvement and exposure for site safety committee and safety teams.
- Develop and distribute safety event alerts as needed to ensure all employees are made aware of incidents/events both here and at other plants. Share safety best practices across plant sites. Provide plant with weekly toolbox talk materials and distribute to individual units.
- Conduct New Employee Safety Orientation.
- Act as an administrative backup to the Nurse.
- Coordinate and manage Health and Safety Projects as assigned.
- Follow and update Cority through completion.
- Work with other departmental resources (warehouse, maintenance, of successful HS programs.
- Assist with building capability of site resources to support implementation of HS programming.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience in occupational safety in an industrial setting.
- Must be computer literate to effectively use current Microsoft Office software, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and other software programs.
- Experience in OSHA record‑keeping requirements and regulations.
- Certified in CPR, First Aid/AED and Bloodborne responder, a plus. Ability to obtain and maintain certification required.
- Serve as technical resource or subject matter expert (SME) for site safety compliance and self‑assessments.
- Possess good problem‑solving skills to address safety issues and conduct root cause analyses that arise within the plant.
- Perform essential functions of the job (i.e., walking, bending, stooping, lifting, kneeling, climbing).
- Ability to obtain and maintain OSHA 10‑hour and OSHA 30‑Hour Train the Trainer.
- Familiar with Internal Accident Investigation process.
- Have a general understanding of Workers’ Compensation, a plus.
- Demonstrate the value of personal safety and behaviors.
- Possess good communication skills, interpersonal skills to conduct meetings, and act as a liaison between employees, contractors
