JOB SUMMARY
If you believe that movement is a superpower and that every child deserves a champion, you're exactly who we're looking for. In this role, you aren't just a teacher—you're a mentor, a wellness coach, and the highlight of a student's day. Elementary Physical Education Teacher creates a positive, high-energy environment where students develop fundamental motor skills, social-emotional habits, and a foundational appreciation for physical activity.
The primary goal is to implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards for Physical Development and Health, fostering a "whole child" approach to wellness, coordination, and cooperative play.
Certification/License:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Physical Education endorsement.
- Elementary (K-9) or K-12 grade level designation (High School/Driver's Ed endorsements are not required for this role).
- Current CPR/AED Certification (required for Illinois PE teachers).
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Education or a related field.
Experience:
- Prior experience teaching at the elementary level or student teaching in a K-5 setting is highly preferred.
- Developmental Instruction:
Delivers high-quality instruction focusing on locomotor skills, non-locomotor movement, and manipulative skills (throwing, catching, striking) appropriate for K-5 learners. - Curriculum Alignment:
Designs lessons that meet Illinois State Goals 19–24, ensuring students understand movement concepts, health-enhancing fitness, and team-building principles. - Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
Integrates Illinois SEL standards into the gym environment, teaching students how to follow rules, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate sportsmanship and respect for others. - Inclusive Practice:
Modifies and adapts activities for students with diverse needs, working closely with Special Education staff to implement Adapted Physical Education (APE) as required by IEPs or 504 plans. - Fitness Assessment:
Administers state-required fitness assessments (such as Fitness Gram) and uses data to help students set personal health goals. - Safety & Environment:
Establishes clear classroom management routines specifically for a large-space gym environment to ensure student safety during high-movement activities. - Wellness Promotion:
Leads or assists in school-wide wellness initiatives (e.g., Field Day, Jump Rope for Heart, or Brain Breaks/Active Classrooms). - Professionalism:
Participates in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and grade-level team meetings to integrate PE with core academic concepts (e.g., math in scoring, science in body systems).
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Pedagogical Knowledge:
Deep understanding of childhood physical development stages and TGfU models. - Behavior Management:
Proven ability to manage large groups of elementary students using positive reinforcement and structured transitions. - Tech Integration:
Ability to use instructional technology (e.g., heart rate monitors, pedometers, or digital grading platforms). - Collaboration:
Strong interpersonal skills for communicating with parents regarding student physical progress and wellness habits. - Equipment Care:
Proficiency in organizing and maintaining a wide variety of elementary PE equipment (mats, parachutes, manipulatives, etc.).
The teacher must be able to demonstrate physical movements (running, jumping, throwing) and remain active for the duration of the school day. Work is primarily performed in a gymnasium or outdoor field setting, which may involve high noise levels and exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor units.
