Title: Teacher‑School Health Aide

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Sixty hours of college‑level credit (preference given to Associates)
  • Degree or higher education and/or
  • Pass Work Keys or ETS Para‑Pro Assessment
  • Preference given to individuals with experience working with the disability category of hire
  • All aides must obtain the Licensure and register credentials with the Illinois State Board of Education.

  • Daily workload determined by student needs and assigned classroom teacher
General Description

Under the guidance and supervision of the teacher, a primary goal of the teacher‑school health aide is to assist the teacher in providing an organized and effective learning environment for students, redirect students when needed per the student's behavior intervention plan, and assist with activities of daily living if necessitated by the student's medical condition.

Contract Term

Generally a nine‑month contract based on 176 work days. Hours will be determined by supervisor, based on building assignment and student needs. Extraordinary Care Aide duties may be assigned if a student is absent without advance notice.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Undergo required training as determined by the program supervisor or Director of Special Education.
  • Carry out learning activities consistent with teacher direction and the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Act as a team member by showing initiative, being prompt and punctual, and contributing to a positive learning and work environment.
  • Implement school‑approved behavior management plans with teacher direction.
  • Maintain daily record keeping and provide feedback on student performance as assigned.
  • Perform routine duties such as supervision of recess, bus, mealtime, and hallway; record keeping for attendance and lunch money; preparation, maintenance, and inventory of materials; cleaning and cleanup after snacks.
  • Observe and ensure the health and safety of all students, including special health and hygiene procedures.
  • Assist with Health Related Service activities such as ambulation, transfer, toileting, behavior intervention, hygiene, and other student‑specific needs.
  • Maintain a daily documentation log of Health Related Services on the HRS form.
  • Attend Tri‑County Early Childhood screenings, conduct screening procedures, and provide feedback to parents.
  • Use confidential information ethically.
  • Assist in developing motor and communication skills, including positioning, range of motion, weight bearing, endurance, coordination, and specialized instruction such as sign language.
  • Follow general school guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Acquire new skills by identifying in‑service needs and participating in in‑service sessions and staff meetings under supervisor direction.
  • Assist in parent‑child contacts and prepare appropriate lessons under teacher supervision.
  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds individually and 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Perform vision and hearing screenings if certified, and assist in child‑finding activities as appropriate.
  • Assist in office tasks such as assimilating and stapling materials, and perform temporary assignments in office or janitorial roles.
  • Assist with supervising students on field trips.
  • Participate in Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) both verbal de‑escalation techniques and physical intervention when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with institutional need.
Integration of Technology
  • Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in planning and designing effective learning environments and experiences supported by available software and technology.
  • Assist in implementing curriculum plans that include methods for applying technology to maximize student learning.
  • Apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
  • Use email, school attendance programs, and electronic time‑sheet systems.
