Job DetailsThe Austin Signal from KUT News is looking for a Producer to produce original segments for Austin’s radio home for local news. The Austin Signal airs daily on KUT News 90.5 at 1 PM, and podcasts are released shortly after the broadcast.
This position is in‑person and based at KUT Public Media. In addition to being Austin’s top‑rated radio station, we are also the home of KUT.org, KUTX—the Austin Music Experience, and our podcast division, KUT & KUTX Studios. KUT News is part of the Moody College of Communications at UT‑Austin.
The ideal candidate is passionate and curious about the forces shaping Austin, and has a talent for communicating complex ideas in terms our audience can relate. Working closely with the show’s managing producer, editors, and KUT News team, the ideal candidate would be able to research and pitch timely topics to be covered on the show. They would coordinate reporter and guest bookings for the show, write questions, edit taped interviews, and help package the segment for air.
They would also step in as needed to direct the daily show, approve all audio elements for air, set the show rundown with the host, and prepare for the next show.
We value teamwork and good communication skills. Previous experience in one of these areas is required. Previous audio editing experience is desired. The ideal candidate is open to learning new skills, as we are willing to provide training and opportunities to learn.
Responsibilities- Participate in editorial meetings.
- Assist in scheduling and segment production, including writing, pre‑interviewing, editing, copying, and distributing schedules and scripts.
- Brief the host.
- Book, produce, and edit taped interview segments as assigned.
- Actively incorporate various perspectives and voices into the editorial process.
- Identify omissions in coverage and suggest ways to mitigate them.
- Produce podcast version of the program and web posts as assigned.
- Assist with producing show content for other digital platforms.
- Create show web posts working with the KUT News digital team.
- Work with host, managing producer, editorial, and programming team to develop novel and innovative ways to present content online, on social media, and on air.
- Ensure content produced by the Austin Signal team meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Fill in for Managing Producer to direct show, approve audio elements for air, set the show rundown with host, and prepare for the next show.
- Ensure consistent flow of communication among the Austin Signal and KUT News team and with partners like the Texas Newsroom.
- Report as assigned.
- Create, coordinate, write, and produce original news segments.
- Assist with daily promos and other content.
- Cover live events as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
- At least 5 years of professional experience producing or reporting for a news organization.
- Strong verbal, writing, editing, and online production skills.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work well under pressure.
- Solid news judgment.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- Familiarity with content management systems and publishing content on different digital platforms, including website and social media.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications- 5+ years of professional experience producing content for a news outlet.
- Experience in a public radio newsroom.
- Experience producing and editing audio, photos, and video.
- Experience operating an audio board and hosting live radio.
- Proficiency in Adobe Audition and the rest of their Creative Suite:
Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere. - Spanish language skills.
$55,000+ depending on qualifications
Working ConditionsStandard office environment.
Work hours:
Monday‑Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. (8 hours/day). Work hours may vary to address breaking news production needs.
