Sr Territory Manager, Business Development - Contract Surety (National Bond Center)

Nationwide is looking for an experienced Senior Territory Manager to lead our surety business across major metro areas (Chicago, St Louis, Kansas City). This role focuses on transactional and small contract surety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor market conditions and confirm information gathered within market space; research risk, environment and factors necessary to win accounts.
  • Perform analysis of the most complex accounts, combining experience, intuition and business savvy to fully understand the landscape and make strategic territory and account decisions.
  • Achieve production, profitability and service objectives; accept, reject or modify new surety business within authority, price according to guidelines, and ensure profitability.
  • Manage workflow and intricacies of underwriting complex assigned work; utilize tools and systems to meet service level agreements.
  • Drive robust agency business planning, deliver detailed performance plans, identify cross‑sell opportunities and coordinate with business leaders.
  • Market company’s products & services to agencies to drive agency and company results and enhance offerings.
  • Consult with agents, accounts and internal partners to provide underwriting recommendations, develop business solutions and improve retention & profitability.
  • Communicate effectively with agencies to establish the company as the provider of choice and to share product changes and market intelligence.
  • Complete agency visits to develop new accounts, service existing accounts, review performance and enhance relationships.
  • Lead delivery of appropriate customer service levels and follow up on escalated requests.
  • Identify training needs, provide coaching, mentor new territory managers and support professional development.
  • Manage heavy workload and backup other team members; monitor business plan results to ensure alignment with underwriting philosophies.
May Perform Other Responsibilities As Assigned.

Reporting Relationships:
Reports to manager or director.

Typical Skills And Experiences Education

Undergraduate degree in business or a related field preferred.

License/Certification/Designation

Pursuit of technical insurance coursework such as AFSB is highly desirable.

Experience

Ten years of progressively responsible surety underwriting experience preferred; expertise in markets consistent with our underwriting appetite and product portfolio preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Thorough knowledge of surety value proposition; working knowledge of state laws and regulations; expert level underwriting knowledge; familiarity with surety forms; knowledge of company marketing/underwriting standards; excellent sales and partnership skills; ability to perform duties with independent judgement; strong decision‑making ability; strong drive for results.

Other Criteria

Leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval by hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions:

Extended and/or non‑standard work hours may be required; extensive travel; ability to relocate; valid driver’s license; safe driving record required.
