Summary

The Valley County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for a Patrol Sergeant to supervise and assist deputies engaged in a wide variety of law enforcement activities. The successful candidate will coordinate shift assignments, respond to calls, manage active crime scenes, and provide tactical guidance during high-stress incidents. They will also maintain a high standard of departmental readiness and public accountability while serving as the primary link between command staff and patrol units.

  • Patrol Sergeants serve as proactive leaders and mentors, responsible for the operational excellence and professional development of the patrol division. By coaching, training, and identifying promotional candidates, Sergeants ensure a high standard of performance while fostering a positive, disciplined work environment.
  • Beyond personnel management, this role bridges the gap between field work and administration by updating departmental policies, making budgetary recommendations, and assisting executive leadership with critical administrative tasks.
  • In the field, Sergeants ensure effective staff coverage through time management, shift scheduling, and tactical priority-setting. They also maintain rigorous oversight by reviewing and evaluating the day-to-day work of deputies, investigating public complaints, and directing specialized programs.
  • During community events and large-scale celebrations, they serve as a visible lead for crowd control and public information efforts.

Typical Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrate a distinguished career in public safety, supported by a minimum of 15 years of law enforcement experience. To ensure proven leadership capabilities, at least five years of this tenure must have been served in a supervisory capacity at the rank of Sergeant or higher, backed by a record of satisfactory performance ratings over the preceding three years.

Patrol Sergeants must possess a comprehensive mastery of the methods, objectives, and procedures of modern law enforcement, applying integrity and ingenuity to every task and complex problem they encounter. This role demands a resilient professional who remains calm, fair, and tactful under pressure, resolving high-stress incidents with a constant regard for individual rights.

As a primary communicator for the department, Sergeants must demonstrate superior verbal and written skills to build lasting investigative relationships and maintain internal cohesion. Finally, the candidate must be technologically proficient, utilizing computers and specialized programs to ensure departmental data is managed effectively and deadlines are met.

Applicants must hold or be able to obtain a valid Idaho Driver’s License within 30 days of hire. Furthermore, the Sergeant is expected to maintain high professional standards by obtaining the Idaho POST Supervisory Certification within one year of appointment, ensuring they are fully equipped to lead within the state's regulatory framework.

As this is a law enforcement position, applicants will be required to undergo a stringent background screening including an in-depth review of their criminal and employment histories, as well as complete and pass a physical and a drug test.

Desired Qualifications

Although not required to qualify at the time of hire, possession of any of the following qualifications and/or experiences will improve the standing of an applicant:

  • Skilled in the operation of marine vehicles, boats, ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and other specialized vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the outdoors and navigate varying climates.
