Position OverviewAs a Certified Veterinary Technician, you support veterinarians and technicians with daily tasks: cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. You deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate care to all patients.
- Greet patients and owners upon arrival and take the patient’s weight and vital signs.
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs).
- Calm and soothe anxious patients.
- Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint.
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs.
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.).
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
- Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, and report unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors.
- Communicate positively with clients and ensure they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s).
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital: clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using chemicals; ensure safe use of chemicals; complete laundry.
- Bath and care for patients who stay overnight; ensure each animal released is clean and properly groomed prior to release.
- Adhere to hospital safety and wellness regulations.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Maintain accurate medical records.
- Maintain a regular full-time presence at work for every shift.
- Promote hospital products and services and support the organization.
- Respond respectfully and promptly to directions from the DVM or Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs).
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Manager; may have specialized duties in areas such as dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine, etc.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) as required by state.
- Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered.
- Displays compassion and builds rapport with animals and owners.
- Uses sound judgment for animal restraint and safety.
- Communicates effectively and appropriately with others.
- Works cooperatively within a team to accomplish goals.
- Demonstrates dependability in completing all job tasks.
- Maintains cleanliness standards consistent with sanitization and sterilization policies.
- Completes tasks quickly and thoroughly without prompting.
- Manages time and prioritizes work tasks effectively.
- Keeps up-to-date with new technical skills and knowledge.
- Performs equipment operation checks and maintenance as needed.
