Clinical Responsibilities
Carries out a full range of registered nurse duties, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient’s condition. Maintains the privacy and dignity of all patients whilst adhering to hospital and department policies. Reports any difficulties you have not been able to solve to Ward Manager.

- Maintains a safe environment when caring for patients, including those requiring frequent monitoring.
- Assist and advise staff, both registered and unregistered, in the delivery of patient care.
- Monitors all patient care and treatment, maintaining high standards and quality at all times.
- Carries out instructions from the nurse in charge and implements treatments ordered by the multidisciplinary team.
- Prioritises nursing care, recognises deterioration in a patient’s condition and escalates to the site team/clinician immediately.
- Maintains accurate, contemporaneous and legible written records of care.
- Ensures effective communication with all levels of staff including the whole multidisciplinary team.
- Under the direction of the Ward Matron, demonstrates clinical skills to pre and post registered nursing staff.
- Adheres to agreed procedures and promotes high standards of quality nursing care in the department.
- Fosters good relationships with other departments, the multidisciplinary team and visitors; helps to achieve and maintain high morale for staff and patients.
- Keep up to date with current developments in nursing and ensure evidence-based practice.
- Adhere to uniform and dress code policy; maintain professional appearance and hygiene.
- Responsible for the control and administration of drugs within regulations; complete hospital drug competency programmes.
- Participate in and lead ward projects; assist in updating professional practice/procedures in line with current research.
- Support training of nursing students and staff; contribute to development of nurses and nursing practice across the hospital.
- Report accidents/incidents to the Ward Manager and follow hospital policy for voicing concerns.
- Interact with patients, visitors and staff with sensitivity to ethnicity, culture, religion and sexual orientation; uphold patient dignity and rights.
- Maintain verbal and non-verbal communication with all patients; optimise use of working time; meet revalidation requirements.
- Attend mandatory training and ensure timely updates are booked; participate in own appraisal and development.
- Lead aspects of training for the team (e.g., moving & handling, infection control); induct new staff; act as mentor/preceptor for students.
- Be prepared to rotate to other areas in consultation with the Ward Manager; assist in implementing group policies and adhering to hospital policies.
- Be trained to use information technology brought into the area; assist in ensuring correct equipment usage and training others as required.
- Engage in ward audits; disseminate outcomes and action plans; promote appropriate incident reporting.
- Adhere to policy on complaints investigation and handling.
- Participate in ward team management, including daily delegation for junior staff.
- Provide feedback to the Ward Manager on staff progression and concerns; act as named nurse for continuing patient care on a shift.
- Report faulty or damaged equipment or unsafe practices; recognise hazards and manage resources responsibly.
- Ensure timely and clear communications; manage budget considerations where applicable.
The duties align with NHS Infection Prevention and Control education framework (2023). All staff should embed good IPC practice, assess IPC risks, provide safe care, and maintain optimal IPC practices as part of daily work.
