Job Title: Lead Teacher

Dept. /Program: Daycare Center – Gwendolyn Bland and/or Blondell Joyner

Reports To: Education Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

The pre-school Lead Teacher is responsible for overseeing the academic and emotional development of children; as well as, designing and implementing Early Learn curricula in basic subjects such as pre-reading readiness and early math experiences. The Lead Teacher will supervise, train and mentor the teaching staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise the educational, social, development, health and individual needs of a given group of children; as well as, ensure the curricula and program meets all agency, city, state and federal policies and regulations.
  • Engage children in activities and play that stimulates their development and assist them with daily life activities (eating, holding books, writing, restroom use, hand washing, etc.).
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining an environment that is clean, organized and safe for all children.
  • Conduct child assessments and facilitate parent‑teacher conferences.
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate record keeping and weekly data entry of children observations into Teaching Strategies Gold database.
  • Promote and encourage the professional growth of classroom associates (assistant teachers, teacher aides, substitute teachers, student teachers, student nurses, volunteers, and any other personnel working within the classroom on a regular basis).
  • Responsible for promoting sound parent relationships by ensuring that information concerning the children and program is appropriately and confidentially shared with parents by classroom associates.
  • Establish a professional level of rapport with each parent/family to ensure quality care and friendly service.
  • Responsible for planning and conducting regular group conferences with classroom associates.
  • Plan and supervise the appropriate use of classroom furniture for optimal program functioning; as well as, overall best use of shared space.
  • Responsible for remaining abreast of advances in the early learn field.
  • Perform related duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Master’s degree in early childhood education/child development and NYS Provisional Certification with 1 - 2 years of work experience as a teacher or Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education/child development with 1 - 2 years of work experience as a teacher.

Must be working toward a Master’s degree and NYS Provisional Certification or Associate degree in early childhood education/child development with 1 - 2 years of work experience as a teacher or assistant teacher.

Must be working toward a Bachelor’s degree, NYS Initial Certification and must have ninety (90) or more undergraduate college credits and one year classroom experience teaching children in pre‑kindergarten, kindergarten or grades 1 - 2.

Must be trained in:

  • Child Abuse/Maltreatment
  • MAT certification
  • First Aid/CPR and AED
  • Mental Health First Aid for children
  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Foundations of Health and Safety
  • Epinephrine auto‑injector

Fifteen (15) hours of training is required every twenty-four (24) months pursuant to the NYS Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Ability to maintain accurate records and strict confidentiality. Ability to work in a team setting. Ability to relate to families of diverse low income and homeless populations preferred.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Ability to see at normal distance, hear normal conversations and sounds. Physical ability to bend, squat, sit on floor, climb stairs, skip and run. Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular paper and use computer keyboard and other office machines/equipment. Ability to safely and occasionally lift or assist children weighing up to 60lbs., when needed.
