Summary

Valley County is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented professional to join the Building Department as a Permit Technician
. This role serves as a vital link between the county government and the community, providing essential technical and clerical support to ensure the safety and integrity of local developments. The successful candidate will navigate the intersection of public service and regulatory compliance, exercising independent judgment and initiative while operating within established county policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Permit Technician is often the first point of contact for the public. This individual manages the front-line experience by greeting visitors, answering inquiries, and providing exceptional customer service.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Technical Review:
    The Technician meticulously reviews building permit applications and plans to ensure they are accurate, complete, and in full compliance with relevant codes.
  • Calculations & Processing:
    Utilizing basic math skills, the individual calculates square footage to determine project costs, collects required fees, and officially issues building permits.
  • Public Liaison:
    Whether responding to questions in person or via phone, the Technician communicates complex information in a courteous, timely, and easy-to-understand manner.
  • Administrative Oversight:
    The role involves high-level organization, including scanning documents, maintaining precise records, and contacting applicants to retrieve or provide critical project updates.

Typical Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience in a professional office environment. As a key representative of the county, the individual must demonstrate a commitment to reliability and prompt attendance, maintaining a consistent presence to serve the public.

A high level of technical and administrative proficiency is required, including the ability to operate standard office equipment and navigate personal computers and job-specific software. The role demands strong basic math skills to ensure accuracy in fee collection and the ability to meticulously prepare, review, and maintain complex records.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are central to this role. The ideal candidate will be an active listener who communicates effectively—both verbally and in writing—with a diverse range of stakeholders. Beyond technical skill, this position requires strong customer service and phone etiquette, ensuring every interaction is handled with a professional demeanor.
