JOB SUMMARY
Obtain valid histology orders, process orders, and perform data entry. Process incoming reference lab samples ensuring proper patient identification and labeling. Follow applicable hospital policies and procedures for transporting or delivering samples to the laboratory. Provide excellent customer service on the phone and in person to all patients, providers, nurses, and other medical staff. Work well under pressure.

Duties And Responsibilities- Be proficient and timely in registration and accessioning of tissue samples, ensuring proper labeling of samples.
- Ensure interface orders are entered appropriately. If orders are missing, notify the appropriate party.
- Provide excellent customer service on the phone and in person to anyone that enters the laboratory. Answer phone calls regarding specimen processing; direct to appropriate party when necessary.
- Answer incoming calls to the laboratory in a professional and timely manner.
- Must maintain patient confidentiality.
- Perform routine histology test procedures as outlined in the histology standard operating procedure manuals and report test results. Adhere to quality assurance and quality control procedures in performing all testing.
- Correlate clinical information and/or previous pathology results and report discrepancies to the Department Lead or Laboratory Supervisor. Consult with the Department Lead or Laboratory Supervisor when no preset criterion for decision making is available before taking action.
- Maintain and operate histology lab equipment; detect malfunctions as they occur by review of instrument results. Troubleshoot the problem with technologist or service representative assistance.
- Ensure appropriate histology lab supplies are always on hand in the assigned area or department.
- Train or instruct histology laboratory personnel in the performance of lab tests and procedures where assigned.
- Participate in established quality management activities, QC testing of histology lab reagents and maintenance of equipment. Follow protocol for running and documenting control values. Collect, evaluate, and report quality management data to monitor and improve histology laboratory performance.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs to monitor proficiency, expand current knowledge and enhance professional excellence. Willingly share knowledge and provide clinical orientation to other members of the lab team.
- Train students from affiliated programs or new employees as assigned.
- Work closely with all laboratory personnel to ensure timely client service and accurate test results.
- Participate in job competency/skills check program.
- Maintain open communication with supervisors, pathologists, and fellow employees to ensure optimal operation of the department. Communicate pertinent information to other members of the health‑care team in a clinically relevant time frame to enhance the lab’s contribution to patient care.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation.
- Adhere to safety, confidentiality, compliance and legal requirements.
- Maintain consistent and reliable attendance and comply with company guidelines on attendance.
- Perform other duties and tasks that promote smooth operations.
- Education/Certification: High School Diploma or higher. Hold a current BLS Certification. Hold a valid driver's license.
- Experience: 2–5 years of laboratory experience required.
- Equipment/Technology: Experience with computers and office equipment required.
- Language/Communication: Ability to read and communicate (oral and written) effectively in English. Bilingual is a plus. Must understand medical terminology.
