The SULI/CCI programs are sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science's Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories/facilities.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities- Perform work under the direction of the mentor and line manager.
- Comply with Laboratory policies, rules, standards, and procedures.
- Perform quality work effectively, efficiently, on-time, and in accordance with defined expectations.
- Protect intellectual property, proprietary information and national security information.
- Encouraged to develop a poster and technical paper documenting their work from the internship for possible use in technical conferences and public forums.
- Attend colloquia that features world-renowned researchers discussing a broad range of energy topics, from nuclear non-proliferation to hybrid energy systems.
- Participate in the touring INL, which covers 900-plus square miles, to learn about research programs, past accomplishments and the future of INL. The INL site tour series includes visits to Experimental Breeder Reactor-1, where nuclear fission generated the world's first usable amount of electricity, the Advanced Test Reactor, a 3D research tool known as a computer-assisted virtual environment - or CAVE - and many other facilities.
- Participate in workshops to help develop important career related skills like resume writing, interviewing, networking and communication skills.
- Internships in technical, engineering, or other deployed areas will support various facilities, plants, projects and mission areas. Work may be conducted in the field collecting data or in an office setting supporting system or business processes such as data analysis, modeling, or predictive analysis. Some areas may include systems and components of reactor and nonreactor facilities, and an understanding of working in a radiological environment.

- Introductory knowledge of subject matter related to the assigned internship project.
- Introductory knowledge of systems and processes related to the assigned internship project.
- Ability to work with support to meet various time deadlines and work pressures.
- Ability to produce or compose formal documents, reports, and records.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with management, fellow employees, and external customers.
- Enrolled full-time at an accredited college/university majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
- A minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
- US Citizenship or be a Permanent Resident Alien.
- Completed coursework or emphasis in related field.
- Minimum overall GPA may be increased above 3.0 depending upon department or program.
The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, operate a computer keyboard or type, handle materials, or reach with hands and arms performing the essential functions of the classification. The duties require sitting for long periods. The employee must occasionally lift 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this classification include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus, conduct research and inspect materials.
