At Kiewit, one of our guiding principles on every project and in every office is “Nobody Gets Hurt”. We’re currently looking for a Safety Specialist who will create, support and audit our programs which reinforce our commitment to safety.
As a Safety Specialist you will report to the Project Safety Manager. Your primary responsibilities include the successful implementation and support of the Site Specific Safety Plan in the field, ensuring compliance with contract, client and corporate safety expectations, and all governing laws. You will verify work execution, problem‑solve with operations and craft, assist with corrective measures, and provide resources to maintain solutions.

Responsibilities- Collaborate with the craft every day in the field to encourage buy‑in of our safety program and support craft ownership.
- Exercise Stop Work Responsibility to ensure adherence to company policies, regulations, and detailed work plans.
- Plan, prioritize, and problem‑solve with operations daily based on leading‑indicator trends and upcoming work.
- Encourage, support, inspire, and advise staff and craft employees.
- Assist with maintaining project files in compliance with OSHA/MSHA regulations, including accident/injury files.
- Assist with first aid and maintain relationships with emergency medical services and clinics.
- Assist with incident investigations and implementation of effective solutions.
- Complete a daily documented hazard inspection and assist operations, craft, and subcontractors with corrective actions.
- Review work plans, work packs, and detailed plans prior to the start of work.
- Provide safety training on policies, procedures, OSHA/MSHA, NCCER, SIMS, orientation, and client‑specific requirements.
- Degree or coursework in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field (preferred).
- Knowledge of construction safety, current Federal and OSHA requirements in commercial nuclear and DOE settings.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.
- Strong work ethic – willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Capacity to access all points of a construction site in wide‑ranging climates and environments.
- Regular, reliable attendance.
- Productive work and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
- Effective and professional communication with supervisors, employees, and others.
- Perform work safely and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs and equipment use.
- Work during normal operating hours and be available for overtime and weekends as required.
- May work at various locations with different conditions.
