Overview
Job Summary Medical Lab Scientist I (MLS I) performs various tests in the highly complex medical laboratory. Exercises independent judgement in dealing with procedural, technical and customer service issues.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Promotes an engaged and positive environment among the laboratory team.
- Performs phlebotomy and prepares specimens for analysis as needed or assigned to ensure a high level of quality is maintained.
- Performs computer functions including test requisition, test results, and quality documentation according to standard protocols.
- Performs high complexity laboratory testing according to protocol. Evaluates specimens for specimen integrity and accurate and complete labeling. Evaluates patient results for reasonableness.
- Performs instrument maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting as scheduled or needed. Maintains appropriate documentation. Responds by following established protocols.
- Participates in annual technical competency program, which may include conducting direct observations.
- Participates in proficiency testing in all areas of competence.
- Assists in training of new employees, students and other lab personnel as appropriate.
- Serves on committees and teams as needed or assigned, actively participating in meetings and completing tasks or assignments.
- Actively participates in continuing education.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

- Maintains confidentiality of the organization and patients.
- Reports any health/medical errors.
- Observes all Environment of Care policies and reports safety risks or hazards immediately.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, required.
- ASCP required. If eligible, must complete within first 6 months of employment/moving into the position.
- Will consider other licensure if comparable to ASCP.
- Proof of education in the form of diploma or transcripts that document degree.
- Must be accurate and precise (required).
- Manual dexterity (required).
- Able to work independently (required).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (required).
- Competent computer skills to navigate within a laboratory information system (required).
- Experience in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and blood bank (required).
- Able to investigate equipment issues or follow troubleshooting instructions from key operator and/or technical service (required).
- Possess a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
- Experience in microbiology (preferred).
- Current laboratory experience or experience beyond internship (preferred).
