Overview

Senior Planner / Housing Coordinator – City of Hutchinson, Kansas, Community Development Department. The City of Hutchinson is seeking a forward-thinking Senior Planner / Housing Coordinator to help lead long-range planning initiatives and strengthen the quantity, quality, and accessibility of housing throughout the community. This is a key professional role within the Community Development Department, supporting strategic growth, neighborhood revitalization, and quality-of-life initiatives for Hutchinson residents.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Community Development, the Senior Planner / Housing Coordinator performs advanced planning and housing coordination work, including long-range planning, housing and neighborhood initiatives, grant administration, redevelopment strategies, and community engagement. The position provides leadership over assigned staff and plays an active role in policy development, program implementation, and City Council support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage long-range planning initiatives, including housing, neighborhood, corridor, and area plans
  • Research, analyze, and interpret data related to housing programs, neighborhood conditions, and comprehensive planning
  • Write, review, administer, and monitor grants related to housing, historic preservation, and community improvement
  • Develop and implement strategies for neighborhood redevelopment and revitalization
  • Assist developers with project coordination, incentives, applications, City Council approvals, and compliance reporting
  • Prepare and manage consultant contracts
  • Develop and support community initiatives that enhance quality of life, including neighborhood development and public amenities
  • Serve as a resource to citizens, neighborhoods, and partner agencies regarding housing and community development programs
  • Prepare reports and presentations for City Council and participate in public meetings and engagement activities
  • Assist with departmental budget preparation and management
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned staff, providing leadership, direction, and performance management
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, community development, public administration, business, or a related field
  • Master's degree in planning or a related field is preferred
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of planning principles, housing programs, and community development practices
  • Demonstrated experience writing and reviewing technical staff reports and grant applications
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including public presentations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, elected officials, developers, and the public
Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based with regular interaction with City staff, community partners, and the public. Occasional fieldwork, meetings, and travel may be required.
