Educational And Experience Requirement
  • Mental Health Counselor I Master’s degree in counseling, counselor education, social work, psychology, or a closely related mental health field. Eligible for provisional licensure or currently licensed in Texas as an Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    -Associate, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    -Intern, or equivalent. Experience working with young adults or college populations preferred. Interest in outreach, wellness programs, and mental health promotion on campus preferred. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Mental Health Counselor II Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or a related mental health field. Current full independent licensure as an LPC or LCSW in good standing (supervision endorsement not required). Must be able to obtain a Texas License within 3 months of hire. Minimum of three years of post-graduate clinical experience. Experience providing counseling in a university or college counseling center or busy community counseling center preferred.

    Knowledge of developmental and systemic factors affecting student success and well-being, and experience in outreach or program development related to mental health promotion preferred. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Mental Health Counselor III Master’s degree in Counselor Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field; or Doctorate in Counselor Education. Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LCSW-S) in the State of Texas. Minimum of five years full-time equivalent post-licensure experience, including at least one year providing clinical supervision in a college, university, or relevant clinical setting.

    Experience in a university or college counseling setting is preferred. Expertise in one or more specialty areas such as trauma, eating concerns, substance use, or neurodiversity preferred. Experience designing and delivering outreach or wellness programs preferred. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Mental Health Counselor IV Master’s degree in Counselor Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field. Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related discipline preferred. Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LCSW-S) in the State of Texas. Minimum of seven years full-time post-licensure clinical experience, including at least two years providing supervision to licensed professionals.

    Experience in a university or college counseling center preferred. Proven success in leading complex initiatives, staff development, or clinical program innovation preferred. History of professional advocacy or leadership within the mental health field preferred. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Nature & Purpose Of Position
  • Mental Health Counselor I Provides professional counseling services to the student body of Sam Houston State University under the supervision of a licensed clinician. Supports the emotional, developmental, and mental health needs of students through individual, couples, and group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach programming, and consultation.
  • Mental Health Counselor II Provides professional mental health counseling services to students through individual, couples, and group modalities. Contributes to the Counseling Center’s mission of fostering emotional well-being, resilience, and academic success. Demonstrates advanced clinical competence, independence, and professional judgment while supporting outreach, prevention, and consultation efforts to promote a healthy campus environment.
