Nature & Purpose of PositionSTEM Tutors support student learning and persistence by reinforcing foundational and course‑specific knowledge in designated STEM disciplines. The position is designed to help students build confidence, develop effective academic strategies, and progress successfully through STEM coursework. Tutors provide academic support through individual and small‑group tutoring sessions, offered both in person and online. Support includes guided content review, assistance with assignments, and the development of effective study and problem‑solving strategies across varying levels of mathematics and related STEM courses.
STEM Tutors typically work 12–20 hours per week, based on program needs and tutor availability, and actively work toward College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification, which is incorporated into the employee evaluation process.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at SHSU for at least two semesters.
- An earned grade of A or B in each course for which the applicant seeks to tutor.
- One or more faculty or instructor recommendations that address subject‑matter competency and the applicant’s ability to work effectively with students.
- Completion of the FAFSA for the current academic term. Applicants who qualify for Federal Work Study will be required to accept the Work Study award.
