Contact EmailDuties Performed in the Usual Course of the JobSam Houston State University (SHSU) and the Newton Gresham Library (NGL) seek a highly skilled, collaborative, and strategic leader for the combined role of Director of Library Technical Services and Collection Development Librarian. This position is crucial for shaping and managing the library’s collections and technical services, which include acquisitions, cataloging, digital initiatives, special collections, and systems administration. The successful candidate will ensure that library resources are effectively acquired, organized, and accessible.
They will also lead initiatives to enhance the library’s technology systems and services.
Administrative responsibilities include directing six tenured and tenure‑track librarians who lead fourteen professional staff in acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, digital initiatives, preservation, special collections, and systems and web services. The Director oversees a $4.7 million library budget, establishes standards, prioritizes departmental goals, manages staff evaluations, ensures collections are discoverable, and coordinates with university stakeholders.
Collection Development duties encompass planning, organizing, and managing the library’s collections, working with subject selectors and academic departments, leading collection assessment projects, chairing the Collection Development Committee, and managing open‑access and OER initiatives. The Director collaborates with the Head of Acquisitions, Cataloging, Digital Initiatives, Systems, Web Services, Special Collections, and the University Librarian to set goals and report on usage statistics and budget performance.
EducationalRequirements
A degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited master’s program is required.
Experience RequiredAt least three years of an established record of library leadership (coordinator, department chair, assistant/associate director/dean/university librarian, or higher).
Other RequirementsA record of librarianship, scholarship, and sufficient for an initial tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
