Overview
This health care professional is a physician assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP) on the neurosurgery team of the Spine and Neuro department at Huntsville Hospital. The primary function is the co-management of patients (i.e., their diagnosis and treatment) under the supervision of neurosurgical physicians within recognized standards of practice. The role involves performing surgical procedures in the operating room under direct supervision of the surgeon, and performing procedures in the clinic under direct or indirect supervision.
The role works with staff, administration, patients and families to ensure quality care across the continuum as an expert in surgical practice areas. On-call coverage requires high-level decision making on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends inclusive of surgery, hospital rounding, consults, and ED visits.
- Co-manage patients under neurosurgical supervision, including diagnosis and treatment.
- Perform surgical procedures in the operating room under direct supervision of the surgeon.
- Perform clinic procedures under direct or indirect supervision.
- Collaborate with staff, administration, patients, and families to ensure quality care across the continuum.
- Provide on-call coverage with high-level decision making for surgery, hospital rounding, consults, and ED visits.
- Education required: Completion of Nurse Practitioner Master of Science in Nursing degree or current Physician Assistant license.
- License/Certification: Successful completion of a National Certification Exam for NP or current registration through the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners for PA. Approval of the Huntsville Hospital Credentialing Board. BLS certification required within orientation period.
- Experience: Minimum one (1) year of work experience as a licensed NP/PA. Inpatient, acute care neurosurgical or surgical experience preferred. Surgical experience strongly preferred for Surgical NP/PA.
- Additional skills/abilities: Must have proven ability to work in a team environment. Must be able to interact with patients and their families in a manner that instills confidence and facilitates communication. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment.
