Overview
The NASA IT portfolio within the Federal Civilian IT sector at Leidos has an opening for a Linux Endpoint Systems Engineer. This role supports the NASA End-user Services and Technologies (NEST) mission to transform, integrate, modernize, and safeguard NASA IT systems and data while continually enhancing the end-user experience. This is a telework position; applicants must reside within a reasonable commute distance from a NASA operating center and be able to go on-site when needed.

- Create, maintain, and deploy software packages for RHEL client applications.
- Develop scripts using RHEL-supported languages (bash, python, YAML) to automate installation of applications and system configurations.
- Develop and execute test plans for client applications.
- Manage the software lifecycle of RHEL client applications, ensuring software is up-to-date and licenses provided by NEST are maintained.
- Utilize client management tools such as Red Hat Satellite and HCL Big Fix to deploy RHEL applications, report deployment status, and inventory software installed on RHEL clients.
- Document software packaging processes, as-built details, and testing results.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues during installation of client software.
- Create and maintain knowledge articles for end users and support technicians.
- Design, package, document, test, deploy and monitor deployment of operating system and software updates; troubleshoot issues that prevent installations of updates.
- Develop, document, test, deploy, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system images that include required applications, patches, drivers, and configurations; update images for hardware compatibility and security patches.
- Develop and execute test plans for new endpoint hardware and OS deployments.
- Administer, monitor and maintain the Red Hat Satellite management platform and internal patch/software repositories.
- Administer, monitor, and maintain the NEST-managed Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS) disk encryption system.
- Provide engineering-level support for incidents related to RHEL OS, software, and management tools.
- Establish and maintain vendor relationships for product support and roadmaps; engage vendor support as needed.
- Ensure that all NEST-managed RHEL clients are up-to-date and properly licensed and registered (Satellite).
- Manage licensing for NEST-managed RHEL clients and Satellite servers.
- Participate in project teams to implement new services and enhancements on the NEST roadmap.
- Create knowledge articles to assist NEST technicians and end users in resolving common issues.
- Resolve incidents and fulfill requests in alignment with program processes and SLA requirements for incident handling, request fulfillment, and uptime.
- Prepare process documentation and provide process training to NEST technicians and other audiences.
- Work with NEST vendors to resolve issues, monitor roadmaps, and implement product changes.
- Provide written and oral status updates on operational activities.
- Serve as a team lead for other NEST personnel providing RHEL operational support.
- Residence within a reasonable commute distance of a NASA operating center and availability to travel on-site as required.
- Public Trust or other security clearance is required.
- Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant experience. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present complex technical subjects to varied audiences.
- Knowledge and experience managing Red Hat Linux operating systems and software.
- Knowledge and experience creating, maintaining and deploying Red Hat Linux operating system images.
- Knowledge and experience creating, maintaining and deploying software packages for Red Hat Linux clients.
- Knowledge and experience administering and supporting disk encryption (LUKS).
- Knowledge and experience using HCL Big Fix to deploy Linux software updates and security patches.
- Knowledge and experience creating scripts to automate Linux system management.
- Ability to work efficiently in a telework environment with strong communication with peers, leadership, customers, vendors and stakeholders.
- Reliable internet connection for telework.
- Suitable workspace conducive for focused work and video meetings.
- ITIL Foundation certification
- A current certification in a relevant field or technology.
