About Our Department
The primary goal of Huntsville Fire & Rescue is to serve the public by protecting life, property and the environment. The department is staffed with well-trained personnel and teams with diverse and highly specialized skill sets to meet the wide-ranging demands for the City of Huntsville, Alabama. On a daily basis the department staffs and coordinates 20 engine companies, five ladder trucks, four rescue trucks, along with a Special Operations Division which includes, Hazardous Materials Units, Technical Rescue Units, and several specialized support units.
Huntsville Fire & Rescue also has investigations, emergency response dispatch, logistics, and training divisions, all of which are diverse, innovative and efficient.
This is technical field work in the area of fire prevention which encompasses public education, enforcement of fire codes, ordinances, standards, guides, and state laws. Work involves conducting field inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances on all public access and private commercial structures within the city limits of Huntsville. Conducts classes, seminars, and drills to educate the public, private, and governmental agencies on an array of fire prevention topics.

Special Requirements
- High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
- Ability to speak in front of small and large groups.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Applicants must also be certified as State Fire Inspector I and Fire Instructor I. Applicant shall be certified before Final date to receive applications or shall obtain certification within ten (10) months of hire date. If a newly hired candidate has not obtained the required certifications within ten (10) months of his/her hire date, continued employment will be governed in accordance with the City of Huntsville’s Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual, which may include termination of employment.
