Overview
The City of Huntsville’s Municipal Court department is seeking qualified applicants to fill our Magistrate position(s). The Huntsville Municipal Court has jurisdiction and responsibility for motor vehicle and traffic violations, criminal misdemeanors, municipal ordinance violations, enforcement or regulation violations under the City Ordinances. The jurisdiction extends to offenses committed within the city limits.
MagistratePosition Overview
This is advanced, quasi-legal work in the issuing and recording of arrest warrants, complaints and affidavits, granting of bail, and receiving pleas of guilty in minor misdemeanor cases. Work involves interviewing citizens with complaints, hearing charges brought by law enforcement officials, determining the existence of probable cause, the proper charge, and issuing the appropriate complaints, affidavits and/or warrants.
Qualifications AndSpecial Requirements
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency. Course work in criminal justice and/or experience in court clerical or paralegal work is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver s license. Must meet the qualifications to complete the "Application to be Appointed/Rescinded as a Magistrate/Warrant Clerk" upon hire/promotion (see State of Alabama link for qualifications).

Must Obtain Within Thirty (30) Days Of Hire/promotion
Elector (registered voter) of the State of Alabama
Valid Alabama driver s license
NCIC/ACJIC Certification
Must Obtain Within Six (6) Months Of Hire/promotion
Notary Public
Must Obtain Within Eleven (11) Months Of Hire/promotion
Certified Municipal Court Magistrate in the State of Alabama
