Position Overview

Under direction, performs professional casework in the interview, investigation, assessment, classification and intensive supervision of criminal defendants and prison inmates in a non-incarcerate setting. Makes determinations and recommendations concerning the eligibility of criminal defendants for assignment to the Madison County Community Corrections Program. The Community Corrections Officer I is a safety‑security sensitive position within the detention services classifications. It involves casework, offender supervision and other tasks related to maintaining the security, custody and control of assigned offenders.

It is distinguished from other detention services classifications in that the community supervision officer is responsible for providing intensive supervision of offenders diverted directly from the Alabama prison system and the Madison County Metro‑Jail Facility and that the supervision caseload is predominantly felony offenders. It is also distinguishable from other classifications due to additional public safety responsibilities, including the performance of field service duties.

The community corrections officer performs a full range of highly responsible duties and performs specialized duties in a highly independent manner.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Director, establishes contacts within the Alabama Department of Corrections and actively solicits information and reports related to the identification of DOC inmates who may be eligible for assignment to the community corrections program.
  • Under the direction of the Director, establishes contacts with the District Attorney's Office and local defense bar to identify felony offenders who may be eligible for assignment to the community corrections program in lieu of confinement within an Alabama Department of Correction Facility.
  • Perform risk assessments to determine a quantifiable level of public safety and flight risk of eligible offenders to determine suitability for and conditions of assignment to the community corrections program.
  • Perform need assessments to determine appropriate services to be provided to assigned offenders on an individualized basis.
  • Provide intensive supervision of assigned offenders, including field work, to monitor compliance and progress within the program and to promote/maintain security, custody, and control of assigned caseload.
  • Attend sentencing and other court dockets as required to provide for the initial intake of assigned offenders and to provide testimony or documentary evidence in open court.
  • Prepare various reports and documents detailing program activity and the compliance and progress of assigned offenders.
  • Prepare various due process letters and documents related to case management.
  • Maintain and oversee written records and files documenting the results of assessment and classification activities; complete data entry of the same.

  • Operate a variety of office equipment including computer, copier, and fax machine.
  • Answer telephone and route calls to appropriate staff person; provide information to callers and office visitors.
Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, sociology or related field from an accredited college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience.
  • Requires two years' experience as a Probation Officer assigned directly to the supervision and management of a defender's caseload.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience working in a community corrections or other correctional service program with direct offender contact and supervision responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Tasks involve visual perception and oral communication ability. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone.
  • The person in this position must be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must be certified as a peace officer by the Alabama Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission or meet eligibility requirements and obtain certification within 9 months of entering the position.
  • Requires a valid Alabama Driver's License and good driving history.
  • Requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have no prior history of drug/alcohol abuse or addiction, or conviction of any crime of moral turpitude as defined by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  • Applicant must pass pre‑employment drug test.
