Water Pollution Control Operator IV; Grade 16

Overview

The City of Huntsville’s Water Pollution Control Department is seeking qualified applicants for the Water Pollution Control Operator IV position. This is technical work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Work involves overseeing the operation and maintenance activities at a wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift, and ensuring the efficient and proper operation of the plant.

Monitors the operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery on an assigned shift to ensure that plant effluent meets state and federal guidelines for purity; monitors the operation of lift stations on evening, night and weekend shifts.

• Oversee the operation and maintenance activities at a wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift.
• Ensure the plant operates efficiently and in accordance with state and federal guidelines for effluent quality.
• Monitor equipment and machinery and manage lift station operations during assigned shifts.

• High school diploma from a regional accrediting agency or GED certificate; considerable experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Grade IV Wastewater Operator Certification from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, or equivalent certifications from states with reciprocal recognition; must be converted to an Alabama Certification within six (6) months of hire date.

The following requirements must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of hire and maintained thereafter:

• Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement
• Alabama Private Pesticide Applicator Permit
• First Aid National Safety Council Certification or equivalent
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• National Safety Council Certification (NSC) or equivalent
• Confined Space Entry Training Certificate
• Trenching and Excavation Certificate
• Chemical Spill Response Certificate
• Temporary Traffic Control Certificate
• Forklift Safety NSC Certification or equivalent
• Defensive Driving 4-Hour NSC Certification or equivalent

• Considerable experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
