Description:
Nuclear Propulsion Project Engineer
The person selected for this position will provide project engineering support for the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) project’s technology maturation and demonstration formulation efforts within the Exploration Technologies & Systems Development Branch (ST20) as a part of MSFC’s Science and Technology Office.
The successful candidate will provide expertise in nuclear operations and technology and will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers. The candidate will also participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and will review trade studies. The candidate will also support external agency coordination with DoW, DoE and others as assigned.
Responsibilities- Provide expertise in nuclear operations and technology to include logistics.
- Review vendor technical approaches and products.
- Develop and review project documentation.
- Perform systems engineering functions.
- Contribute to project status reporting.
- Support external agency coordination with DoW, DoE, and others as assigned.
A degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, or a BS degree in a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 17 years of relevant experience in nuclear technology, operations and logistics.
- Significant understanding of the operation of nuclear systems and the ability to extend that knowledge to space applications, namely nuclear thermal and nuclear electric propulsion.
- Strong project management, communication, teamwork, and productivity skillsets are required.
- Experience in DoW, DoE or other external agencies is desired.
Work Environment:
