System Safety Manager

Iron Mountain Solutions is seeking a System Safety Manager for the Huntsville area to lead the safety efforts for a complex aviation overhaul and production efforts, with cross‑functional coordination across mechanical, electrical, structural, and quality engineering disciplines. This role requires a balance of technical knowledge and system safety management expertise to ensure compliance with all applicable DoD and Air Force regulations.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Education and General Experience
  • Minimum of a BS degree in engineering or an applied science, safety, or business administration curriculum, including college courses in safety and human engineering.
  • Minimum of 4 years system safety experience; approximately 10 years diversified experience in various phases of engineering, safety, and management is desired; or demonstrated capability, through previous experience and education, to perform successfully the duties and responsibilities shown below.
  • Registration as a professional engineer or certification as a system safety professional is preferred.
  • Proven system safety experience supporting evaluation, repair, modification, and production support of aviation platforms.
  • Proven experience coordinating safety efforts for cross‑functional teams that include engineering (mechanical, electrical, structural), quality, and production disciplines.
  • Strong working knowledge of DoD safety regulations and industry standards (e.g., DODIs and MIL‑STD 882E, etc). Knowledge of Air Force Safety Regulations and Instructions is preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools such as MS Word, EXCEL, and Access or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience supporting programs involving aircraft modifications, system retrofits, or component overhauls.
  • Team‑oriented mindset with a continuous improvement approach.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 25%.
Job Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage system safety efforts related to aircraft overhaul, modification, and production support programs from initiation through completion.
  • Develop and deliver a detailed System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), in accordance with MIL‑STD 882E Task 102.
  • Coordinate the execution of safety‑related technical efforts across mechanical, electrical, structural, and quality engineering teams.
  • Serve as the central point of contact between Engineering, Quality, Production, Supply Chain, and senior leadership for system safety.
  • Facilitate and support daily stand‑ups, status meetings, and technical issue resolution to maintain program momentum and alignment.
  • Act as the primary interface for customers, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders on safety matters.
  • Ensure customer safety requirements are clearly understood, documented, and met throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Evaluate sub‑contractor safety programs and health hazard communication programs.
  • Lead safety reviews, progress briefings, and risk mitigation updates with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all program activities are conducted in compliance with applicable military and industry regulations (e.g., DODIs and MIL‑STD 882E, Air Force Regulations, Guidance and Instructions).
  • Identify and proactively manage hazard‑related risks, recommending corrective mitigation action plans as necessary for hazards related to system modifications, including storage and shipping.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a Hazard Tracking System database.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a Hazardous Material Management Program. Deliver CDRL for the Hazardous Material Management Program Plan (HMMPP), in accordance with MIL‑STD 882E Task 106.
  • Support audits and mishap root cause investigations.
  • Act as the primary interface for the supported airframe and LRSO System Safety Working Group meetings. Prepare presentations as required for potential hazard related to the contracted efforts.
  • Perform required physical activities such as standing, walking, sitting, using tools or controls, climbing stairs, and lifting or moving office products and supplies up to 25 pounds.
Clearance Requirements

The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance is required. Per federal requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this level of clearance.
