** Principle duties and essential functions
*** Performing research on optical transmission systems, sub-systems and distributed fiber sensing with focus on the physical layer
* Setting up experimental assemblies in the laboratory and conducting experiments
* Contribution to the organization of the laboratory
* Cooperation with national and international project partners
* Internal subproject lead for research and advanced development projects
* Creative application of knowledge and experience in several of the following fields:  + Technologies for increasing capacity of optical communication systems (multi-band transmission, space-division multiplexing)  + Amplifier setups for new applications  + Techniques for monitoring signal quality in optical networks  + Joint data communication and distributed fiber sensing
** Knowledge, skills and experience required
*** Diploma or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related area
* Good programing skills (e.g. Python, C/C++)
* Good knowledge in optical transmission technologies and optical fiber effects
* Laboratory experience in optical sub-system and system characterization
* Ideally experience in one or more of the following topics:  + Coherent optical transmission and optical modulation  + Optical amplification and switching  + Monitoring of signal quality in an optical network
* Good presentation and communication skills
* Innovative, highly motivated personality
* Fluent oral and written English language skills, fluency in German is a plus
* Capability to think strategic, innovative, constructive and application oriented
