Summary

Responsible for responding appropriate equipment or personnel to emergency and non-emergency calls for fire and emergency medical services as well as on call department services. Identifies and dispatches appropriate units; complies with USAP policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all public safety responders and the public.

Position Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean workplace and ensuring that safetyis the highest priority in the workplace. Adheres to ASC Safety guidelines and participates in weekly safety meetings.

  • Under the direct supervision of the dispatch supervisor, responsible for the supervision and operation of all communications and computer management for the Antarctic Fire Department. This includes the day-to-day operation of the fire department dispatch center, including but not limited to; all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, pagers both 9-1-1, and administrative phone lines, VHF radios and fire alarm receiving system.

  • Provides direct supervision of all subordinate communication coordinators (dispatchers).

  • Monitors the automatic fire alarm system and dispatches emergency responders and/or technicians as appropriate and creates corresponding service requests for technicians.

  • Monitors, answers, and interprets various equipment indicating facilities emergencies. Prioritizes information, delegates to the appropriate trade, and creates service requests for emergency facility work orders.

  • Responsible for communicating with and notifying emergency service personnel when appropriate. (Fire Fighters, Search and Rescue (SAR), fire Technicians, Medical staff, Spill Response personnel, etc.)

  • Monitors and operates HF/VHF/Satellite telephone equipment, various radio equipment and assists communications technicians with troubleshooting equipment when necessary.

  • Assists with operational aircraft communications, including uncontrolled airfield announcements and distributing aircraft movement reports to field camps, other stations, fire personnel and various other departments.

  • Maintains knowledge of, and tracks, vehicle movements, field parties and Recreation groups in accordance with the USAP safe travel policy, and field camp check in policies. Initiates EOC procedures as required.

  • Performs communication related data entry utilizing Software, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and other applications. Responsible for accurate and timely reporting for all logs and reporting systems.

  • Thoroughly communicates current and pertinent information during every shift exchange.

  • Coordinates international communications and relays information to appropriate agencies.

  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner and in accordance with PII/SI/PHI policies and procedures.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the phone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Provides set-up and communications staffing personnel for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during emergency events and drills.

  • Coordinates radio communications as required during Fire Department, SAR or mass casualty events/drills, and conveys instructions via UHF/VHF/HF/Satellite as directed by the EOC Director.

  • Notifies communications technicians when equipment malfunctions or failures occur.

  • Provides communication support to personnel in the field.

  • Monitors vehicle travel away from station during winter and win-fly. Initiates SAR procedures as required.
