Marshall University is a public comprehensive university in Huntington, West Virginia. The Controls Technician will maintain and troubleshoot HVAC, lighting, and building automation systems to ensure efficient and safe operation across campus.
Responsibilities- Install, replace, and repair electronic building automation controllers and associated devices.
- Interpret building and machinery documentation to troubleshoot and repair systems.
- Identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and programming problems.
- Use vendor‑specific software tools to troubleshoot system issues and perform preventative maintenance.
- Read and interpret drawings and sequence of operations.
- Inspect, test, and troubleshoot a variety of electric and electronic equipment such as sensors, control panels, input/output panels, flow meters, and relay panels related to utility and HVAC control systems.
- Assist other shops with HVAC, electrical, and control system troubleshooting and repair.
- Handle emergency calls during the day and after hours.
- Maintain an organized, safe, and secure work area and required tools and equipment.
- Receive, complete, and create work orders.
- Attend work regularly, report to work punctually, and follow the work schedule.
- Maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes related to maintenance and construction.
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree.
- Five years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, performing a full range of tasks associated with controls and building automation systems in large institutional settings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Ten years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, performing a full range of tasks associated with controls and building automation systems in large institutional settings.
- Work week: 37.5 hours.
- Winter Break: approximately two weeks off.
- Paid Holidays: 13.
- Annual and sick leave: up to 24 days of annual leave and up to 18 days of sick leave per year for qualified staff.
- Health insurance: through West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) with seven plans.
- Tuition benefits for employees and eligible dependents.
- Retirement plan: TIAA 401(a) for full‑time eligible employees.
- Basic term life insurance: $10,000 at no cost, with optional additional coverage.

MU – Marshall University
Salary range: $39,500 – $51,400 (adjustable based on education, experience, and internal equity). Full‑time, non‑exempt.
