Job Title: Acute Care Physician Clinical Informaticist
Location: Marshall Health Network
Reports To: Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO)
Position Summary The Acute Physician Clinical Informaticist provides clinical leadership to advance the utilization of clinical information systems consistent with the mission of Marshall Health Network, Marshall Health, and other supported organizations. The physician informaticist provides support and guidance for the design of systems, clinical content, workflow and operational processes, quality of care, and benefits realization to support organizational transformation of care.
The physician informaticist ensures that medical informatics concepts are integrated into information systems strategic planning, application design, and implementation tactics. The physician informaticist participates as a member of IS Governance across all supported entities to represent the needs and requirements of the physician community and serves as an advocate of management in promoting the use of information technology in the clinical setting.
The physician informaticist works in partnership with Clinician and Administrative leadership to translate clinician requirements into information system needs for clinical, teaching, and research systems. These systems must be designed to support clinicians in the delivery of patient care, in addition to training and research missions. The physician informaticist is expected to maintain clinical practice according to their individual area of expertise for at least 25% of their professional time.
- Actively supports physician engagement and alignment in the effective use of clinical IT resources.
- Promotes the use of information technology and analytics in the clinical setting to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and adherence to regulatory guidelines.
- Participates and/or leads clinical advisory groups and committees to provide broad-based input into the design of clinical information systems. Participates in other organizational groups and committees as needed.
- Identifies opportunities to optimize existing applications and processes.
- Leads and facilitates clinician engagement in the design of clinical systems to support excellence in patient care.
- Engages patient care providers with varying roles including physicians, nursing practitioners, physician assistants, nursing staff, ancillary department personnel, and medical records professionals to contribute to the development and use of the clinical information system.
- Develops empathy and understanding of physician needs and builds relationships with physicians to gain support of IS initiatives.
- Is highly responsive to user needs, including training, to assure widespread acceptance and provider use of the clinical systems.
- Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences, and approaches; develops technical and application implementation strategies; and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems.
- Works closely with physician leadership roles such as CMIO, CCOs, CMOs, CPE and Section Chiefs and leads efforts to utilize information technology to support the advancement of clinical quality and safety and population health initiatives through the use of clinical information systems and analytics.
- Collaborates effectively with other clinical informaticists, such as nurse clinical informaticists, to support multi-disciplinary optimization and innovation opportunities.
- Supports efforts to meet requirements for HIPAA, The Joint Commission audits, quality reporting, and other regulatory requirements using clinical applications and analytics.
- Supports the development of clinical information systems for the implementation of evidence-based medicine, safety practices for patients, and increased efficiency in quality patient care.
- Identifies, establishes, and monitors appropriate value metrics and return on investment for major clinical information systems such as the EHR.
- Participates in applicable clinical research as interest or requirements allow.
