Student Employment Program

Student employment offers opportunities to earn money while continuing education and gaining on-the-job experience within the Coast Community College District. Employment ranges from summer jobs to positions that last while you are a student. These roles may be related to your field of study or not.

Available roles within the program include:

  • General-Student Assistant
  • Federal Work-Study Student Assistant
  • CalWORKs Work-Study Student Assistant
Summary

A student assistant works in a department of the college or district site with duties designed for students in non-classified job roles. Duties range from unskilled to skilled and may require clerical, manual, or public-contact tasks. Assignments are aligned with class schedules and are more flexible than off-campus jobs.

Student assistants choose assignments that align with their academic and career goals; duties vary by department and position.

Representative Duties

Specific duties are defined by the respective Division or Department. On-the-job training may be provided.

Student Assistant Levels

Student Assistant I - Entry level/Semi-skilled
:
Supervised with established methods; routine tasks; may involve special equipment or software. Supervisor assigns work and provides instructions.

Student Assistant II - Intermediate/Advanced
:
General supervision with some independent judgment; varied tasks; may involve access to data systems and confidential information; typically requires at least one year in the same assignment.

Student Assistant III - Specialist/Lead
:
Broad responsibilities with considerable training; may supervise lower-level staff; typically requires at least two years in the same assignment.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Education and Experience:

  • Student Assistant I:
    Little or no prior experience or education required
  • Student Assistant II:
    Some prior knowledge, experience, or education required
  • Student Assistant III:
    Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required

Skills and Competencies

  • Skills required to perform a job assignment.
  • Depending on the level and assignment, limited independent judgment and decision-making may be required.
  • Ability to balance work and studies.

Qualifications:

  • Students must be full-time students and enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at OCC, GWC, or CCC to be eligible for a student assistant position.

Note:

Part-time students may qualify for federal work-study or other grants; complete the Financial Aid application  and indicate interest in Federal Work-Study. Contact your campus Financial Aid office with questions.

Conditions of Employment

Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel;
Student Assistants are at-will employees and are not benefits eligible.

  • Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 hours per week during fall and spring; may work up to 28 hours per week outside those semesters.
  • Student Assistants are prohibited from additional District employment in the same fiscal year.
