Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting, Accounting Manager, Accounting & Finance
Our client is a union electrical contractor supporting multifamily and large-scale residential construction projects throughout Southern California. With $50M in annual revenue and a strong, active project backlog, the business is continuing to grow and is seeking a people-driven
Senior Accountant to step into a central, high-impact role within the accounting function, one that is designed to grow in scope and responsibility as the organization scales, with a direct path to a Controller.
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Accountant will take full ownership of the month-end close, job cost oversight, and core construction accounting processes. The role is intentionally positioned for someone who wants accountability, visibility, and a meaningful voice in how the business operates financially as it continues to grow. As the company scales, this position will play a key role in moving accounting practices from functional, legacy processes toward more disciplined, scalable standards.
Prior hands-on experience in construction or subcontractor accounting is a non-negotiable for success in this role.
- Provide oversight and mentorship to junior accounting staff across AP, AR, and project accounting, ensuring strong controls, follow-through, and accountability.
- Own and execute the full month-end close process, preparing accurate financial statements and consistently closing within 6 business days.
- Oversee job cost and WIP reporting, reviewing weekly reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and usefulness for leadership decision-making.
- Manage construction-specific accounting requirements, including 20-Day Preliminary Notices and the tracking of conditional and unconditional lien waivers.
- Partner with the CFO to prepare and support weekly labor actual-versus-budget analysis on a project-by-project basis.
- Oversee AR and AP to support cash flow planning, pay-when-paid dynamics, and vendor relationships.
- Identify, improve, and formalize accounting processes that are currently manual or paper-heavy, helping the business scale more efficiently.
- Collaborate with leadership and operations to surface issues early, improve financial visibility, and strengthen overall operational discipline.
- Impeccable communicator with high emotional intelligence and judgement.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
- 3+ years of hands-on accounting experience within the construction industry, ideally in a subcontractor environment, required.
- Working knowledge of CA construction accounting requirements, including lien laws, 20-Day Preliminary Notices, and conditional and unconditional lien waivers.
- Demonstrated ability to independently own and manage the full month-end close process.
- Strong job cost accounting and WIP oversight experience.
- Advanced Excel skills, including VLOOKUPs, XLOOKUPs, and complex spreadsheets.
- Experience with ERP systems in project-based environments such as Sage, Dynamics, Net Suite, Syspro, etc.
- Empathy and patience when mentoring junior team members, while still holding high standards for accuracy, accountability, and follow-through.
- Comfort working in a fully in-office, fast-paced, and passionate construction environment in the OC area.
Our client offers a base salary range of $80,000–$95,000 plus bonus potential. The benefits package includes medical coverage (employee-only coverage paid by the company), dental, vision, paid sick time, unlimited PTO, and paid holidays.
