As the Maxillofacial Team expands and grows the service, an exciting opportunity has arisen at Maxillofacial Unit at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham. We are looking for a professional, enthusiastic and self‑motivated qualified GDC registered Dental Nurses, with at least one‑year's post‑qualification experience to join our busy and dynamic team.

You will work as part of a wide‑ranging multidisciplinary team that encompasses orthodontics, restorative dentistry and oral/maxillofacial surgery. This includes a nursing team comprising registered dental nurses, registered staff nurses, clinical support workers and nursing health care assistants.

Although presently the majority of our workload involves working at Castle Hill Hospital, some travelling may be required as occasionally trauma clinics are held at Hull Royal Infirmary in Hull.

As a dental nurse, the post holder is engaged in the duties of a specialist nature to provide the highest level of care throughout a wide range of different types of intervention with maxillofacial, orthodontic and restorative consultants. Regular combined clinics with the Orthodontic / Restorative and Maxillofacial teams facilitate patient surgical care. The dental nurse will assist a variety of medical staff to carry out dento‑alveolar surgery for patients.

Weekly day‑case operating sessions provide surgery under general anaesthetic; other surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic throughout the unit.

Main duties of the job

It is essential that the candidates have the motivation and enthusiasm to learn new skills in this specialized environment. It is important that the candidates show an understanding of all aspects of the different specialties (i.e. orthodontics, restorative & minor oral surgery).

For the successful candidate, the role will involve:

  • The post holder will assist dental practitioners with dental treatment: provides pre‑ and post‑operative dental hygiene advice to patients in specialist dental areas such as orthodontic, maxilla‑facial and restorative.
  • The post holder will prepare materials, instruments, equipment for specialist dental practitioner.
  • The post holder will deliver specialist clinical skills, which include a range of peri‑operative duties to ensure the patient’s comfort at all times.
  • The post holder will have direct patient contact, delivering direct care in the peri‑operative setting in accordance with the needs of patients.
