Position Overview
Airport Communication Operator – controls communications equipment to receive, process and respond to emergency and non‑emergency airport calls, monitor alarm systems, and maintain communication logs for George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby Airports.
Workdays & HoursShift work. Rotating schedule may include weekends and holidays. Subject to change.
Scope of WorkThe Operations Division manages the Airport Operations Centers, airside and landside operations, security, badging, safety, and emergency management. The team ensures a safe, secure and efficient customer experience from roadway to runway and collaborates with TSA, HFD, HPD, FAA and other agencies.
Purpose of the PositionOperates communications equipment to receive and process emergency and non‑emergency calls, process paging and information calls, monitor alarm systems, aircraft emergency alerts, road incidents, fires, bomb threats, security and maintenance requests.
Responsibilities- Operate the airport telephone exchange, PA system and TDDs.
- Provide routine customer information (arrivals, departures, traffic, parking, services, lost luggage, directions, emergencies) and maintain a daily log of calls.
- Direct public calls to appropriate parties for lost/locked vehicles, tows, injuries, and maintenance issues.
- Broadcast information to airport personnel regarding aircraft emergencies and hazardous conditions per the Emergency Procedures Manual.
- Enter airline schedules into the information display system and update flight and gate data daily.
- Monitor access control systems for unauthorized access to AOA and other security areas, notify authorities of civil defense alerts.
- Relay maintenance requests (card readers, gates, lighting, plumbing) and update the maintenance tracking system.
- Perform other job duties as assigned by supervisor.
Generally comfortable; occasional stooping, bending and light lifting up to 10 lb. Exposure to variable temperatures and chemicals. Requires coordination of gross motions in response to changing stimuli.
Minimum RequirementsEducational Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
Experience Requirements
- One year experience in a major airport terminal or similar facility handling communication activities.
License Requirements
- None.
Preference
- Prior experience in medium to high volume dispatch, communications or call center.
- CCTV experience.
- Ability to monitor multiple screens.
- Certifications:
NIMS IS‑100, NIMS IS‑200, TCLEOSE, TCOLE, A.A.A.E ACE, etc. - Proficient in MS Outlook and Office Suite.
- Veteran preference per Executive Order 1‑6.
Selection/Skills Tests
- Application review, interview, possible skills assessment test.
Safety Impact Position
- Yes – subject to random drug testing and a required assignment drug test if promoted.
Pay Grade
Grade 14.
Salary Information
Based on qualifications and pay rates of comparable employees.
