Job Description
Position InformationJoin the Texas Department of Transportation and help keep Texas moving! We're seeking motivated individuals for our General Transportation Tech I positions to perform essential roadway maintenance, repair, and inspection work across our state's highway system. These roles involve operating light and heavy equipment, performing preventive maintenance, installing and repairing signs, assisting with traffic control, and responding to emergency situations such as accidents or severe weather.
This position is physically active, hands‑on, works outdoors in various weather conditions, requires a Commercial Driver's License, and plays a vital role in ensuring safety and mobility for the traveling public.
Minimum Salary: $40,918.00
Maximum Salary: $61,130.00

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: None specified.
Experience: No experience required. Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
