Overview

The Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising aquatic and recreation programs. Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator/Recreation Specialist, the Head Lifeguard performs professional duties in ensuring performance for lifeguard functions. The Head Lifeguard is expected to have adequate knowledge of the overall operations and facility amenities of the Department. We pride ourselves on the provision of excellent customer service. It is essential that the Head Lifeguard reports to work in a timely manner and is ready to serve customers using municipal aquatic facilities. The Head Lifeguard assists with planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating comprehensive aquatic programs for the assigned facilities. Plan, train, assign and direct the activities of assigned staff. In addition to these responsibilities, they assist in opening identified facilities and amenities, routine maintenance, completing reports and correspondence as directed, issuing and receiving equipment and supplies, and securing facilities upon closing.

May serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) when Aquatics Intern, Aquatics Coordinator and/or full-time staff are not on site. The MOD will be responsible for facility operations, staff, customer safety and daily operations, and will notify the on-duty supervisor or on-call staff of issues and maintain communication for support as needed.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate regular and timely attendance at work as scheduled and report to work free from the effects of illegal substances or alcohol. Must not be impaired due to prescription medications.
  • Supervise activities at the pool and surrounding areas to prevent accidents.
  • Maintain order in the pool and adjoining areas by managing activities, classes and programs. Coordinate lane/pool use with user groups to maximize space and efficiencies. Enforce facility policies to keep customers off deck or in designated watch areas.
  • Warn swimmers about unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce and adhere to facility rules and regulations.
  • Respond quickly and decisively to emergencies in accordance with established procedures. Perform rescues, first aid, CPR/AED as required. Serve as lead/primary rescuer during emergencies.
  • Maintain excellent physical condition and attend required staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Ensure lifeguards are properly stationed and equipped during rotations, monitor scanning effectiveness, and ensure lifeguards are hydrated and alert. Serve in rotations as necessary to meet minimum standards for lifeguards on duty.
  • Customer Service
    • Wear name badge at all times while on duty.
    • Provide superb customer service to members, customers and guests, and ensure subordinate staff do the same. This includes:
    • Meet and greet customers, assist them and direct them to the proper swim lesson, class, room or facility.
    • Personalize the experience for all guests.
    • Exhibit a positive attitude and a can-do mentality during all in-person interactions.
    • Speak clearly and helpfully during phone interactions.
    • Send clear, concise, and polite email communications with detailed information.
    • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all programs and activities offered through the Parks and Recreation Department to citizens and other customers.
  • Staff Management
    • Day-to-day supervision of Aquatics staff.
    • Assist with interviewing and hiring aquatics personnel.
    • Ensure staff are well trained and consistent in information given to customers.
    • Support initial and ongoing training of aquatics personnel.
    • Delegate tasks to lifeguards and assist with swim lesson management as directed.
    • Assist in developing, implementing and enforcing policies and procedures for staff.
    • Support scheduling, coordinating and conducting service trainings. Ensure lifeguards are competent in first aid, CPR and water rescue techniques through regular audits.
    • Schedule and manage changes to staff schedules, including day-of changes, call-ins, and other adjustments.
  • Perform staff audits to ensure skills, rotations and swim lesson skills are correct and that duties are met at required levels.
  • Manager on Duty
    • Serve as manager on duty when full-time staff are not on duty.
    • Prepare daily reports.
    • Check pool chemicals and report levels to supervisors as required.
    • Adhere to opening and closing procedures and secure the facility at closing.
    • Enforce established facility rules and policies.
    • Demonstrate preparedness to lead during emergencies.
    • Ensure facility, furniture and equipment are safe and secure for customers.
    • Serve as event lead at special events as assigned.
    • Assist or serve as the manager on duty when full-time staff are not on duty.
  • Maintenance of Pool Operations/Facility Upkeep
    • Check pool chemicals and report levels to supervisors as required.
    • Set up, disassembly and storage of tables and chairs for trainings or meetings.
