Purpose of the Position
Safely and efficiently identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil. Safely demolishes structures using hand tools or mechanical equipment as assigned.
- Remove asbestos from ceilings, walls, beams, boilers, and other structures, following hazardous waste handling guidelines and safe demolition techniques.
- Assemble scaffolding and seal off work area, using plastic sheeting and duct tape.
- Position mobile decontamination units or portable showers at the entrance of the work area.
- Build a connecting walkway between the mobile unit or portable showers and the work area, using hand tools, lumber, nails, plastic sheeting, and duct tape.
- Position portable air evacuation and filtration systems inside the work area.
- Spray chemical solution over asbestos-covered surfaces using a tank with attached hose and nozzle to soften the asbestos.
- Cut and scrape asbestos from surfaces using a knife and scraper.
- Shovel asbestos into plastic disposal bags and seal the bags using duct tape.
- Clean the work area of loose asbestos using a vacuum, broom, and dustpan.
- Place asbestos in disposal bags and seal the bags using duct tape.
- Dismantle scaffolding and the temporary walkway using hand tools, then place plastic sheeting and disposal bags in transport bags.
- Seal the bags with duct tape and load them into a truck or dumpster.
- Follow directions of foremen, supervisors, and managers.
Must be on your feet for up to 10 hours per day; must have unrestricted clearance to wear a respirator for up to 10 hours with few breaks; regular standing, sitting, kneeling, twisting, bending; must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 25 pounds regularly and over 50 pounds occasionally; must be able to work in extreme hot, cold, wet, or dry environments;
must be able to perform repetitive motions such as scraping, sanding, and shoveling.
