Purpose:

Constructs, modifies, or repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and environmental controls systems. This employee may serve as the technical expert in one or more areas of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning fields. Employees at this level review the heating and cooling requirements and make recommendation to achieve optimum system effectiveness and efficiency. The employee is expected to resolve most problems.

Work is performed independently under general supervision. Qualifications/

Skills:

Education/Certification:

* High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years college preferred HVAC courses.

* Valid current Class "C" Texas driver's license.

* EPA Universal license Certified to handle CFC's under 40

CFR, Part 82, sub part F or willing to secure within the 1st year of hiring.

* Preferred Stationary Building Engineer License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.

* Prefer HVAC license or electrical maintenance license with City of Houston or state; a positive asset but not a requirement.

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Considerable knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory.

* Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.

* Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.

* Working knowledge of electricity.

* Working knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic and digital control systems.

* Ability to work well with peers and supervisor.

* Ability to communicate effectively with district employees and community.

* Proficiency in the use of specialized test and processing control equipment, including computer workstations involving HVAC programming, laptops utilized to download control programs, trouble shooting of computer process boards on various brands of cooling and heating equipment.

* Capable of making independent, on the spot, "safe to operate" decisions regarding safety of students, staff and, the public.

Experience:

* Minimum ten (10) years experience required.

Major Duties and

Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repair:

* Overhaul large reciprocal, absorption and centrifugal compressors.

* Troubleshoot and repair complex chiller or control problems, determines parts needed and work procedures.

* Analyze HVAC system requirements recommending new systems or modifications.

* Research new equipment or procedures for possible adoption and use.

* Set heating, air conditioning, ventilation and environmental control equipment into place.

* Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.

* Conduct energy management conservation surveys to realize most efficient, cost-effective use of HVAC energy.

* Receive and complete work orders. Select materials and hardware and generate time, materials, and job estimates.

* Maintain accurate records on material and labor used. Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials. Inspect and run projections

* Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects. Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection and walk through procedures. Respond to emergency calls during regular hours and after hours.

Safety:

* Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.

* Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.

* Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.

* Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

* Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
