Job SummaryAs a highly visible representative of the Museum and working as a member of a team under direct and indirect supervision, Gallery Attendants provide a welcoming and informative experience for all visitors while protecting the museum’s buildings, contents, grounds, guests, and employees.
Responsibilities- Perform patrols of assigned galleries, creating a welcoming and informative experience for all guests
- Maintain awareness for theft, vandalism, and disruptive behavior
- Report to the Security Manager any irregularities such as damage to art objects, unkept areas, fire hazards, environmental hazards, or unsecured security exposures
- Interact with visitors to give directions, information, and general assistance
- Inspect works on view and display cases at the beginning and end of each rotation
- Report suspicious activity to the Security Manager as necessary
- Communicate museum policies regarding the safety of the collection and ensure staff and visitors adhere to protocols
- Assist with emergency situations such as medical incidents and evacuations
- May serve as a member of the museum emergency response team
- Respond to alarms in display cases promptly and handle them efficiently
- Escort visitors and contractors throughout the building when directed
- Secure galleries and museum premises when closing
- Ensure all patrons have exited
- Ensure visitor compliance with all museum gallery and campus regulations
- Assist with other museum activities as assigned
- Strong customer service mindset with ability to interact with the public and anticipate visitor needs
- Tactful and polite in dealing with the public
- Proficient in English, both written and verbal
- Present a neat and tidy appearance at all times in accordance with security department guidelines
- Observant and able to detect and report unusual behavior
- Alert and able to respond quickly in an emergency
- Obtain and maintain First Responder, CPR and related certifications annually
- Physically able to administer First Aid and CPR, carry first aid equipment, and assist with lifting and moving victims if required
- Flexible to work various shifts and special events beyond scheduled shifts
- Full‑time staff must be available to work weekends regularly
- Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills with a friendly, personable manner
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous customer service or security experience preferred
- Must possess or be qualified to obtain a level 2 Non‑Commissioned Security Guard license with Texas Department of Public Safety
- Security personnel must pass a national criminal background check to maintain non‑commission status
- All applicants must have a valid state issued driver license
- Ability to remain alert and observant over a long period of time
- Bilingual is a plus
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods, including using stairs
- Must have accurate vision (22/20 or 20/40 with corrective lens acceptable)
- Ability to distinguish standard colors
- Ability to hear normal conversation at a distance of 15 feet
- Duties require standing for long periods, walking distances, and climbing stairs throughout the shift
- Working conditions may be indoors or outdoors; inclement weather may occur when working outside
