Job Description Summary / TWC Summary

The GIS/Research Director, Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice is responsible for providing technical expertise and supervision for day-to-day implementation and operation of the GIS within the context of programs, research initiatives, and policy directives. The GIS/Research Director is also responsible for managing research projects involving the collection, analysis, and dissemination of geospatial data.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Manage web-based/interactive GIS hardware and software for the Bullard Center including conducting evaluation of needs, licensing, recommendations for system and data architecture.
  • Oversee and provide technical guidance regarding activity associated with implementation, operation, and enhancement of the GIS assistance and visualization for Bullard Center-associated research projects.
  • Conduct research and development on new GIS related products and procedures.
  • Summarize and convey relevant information to external community groups and partners in the HBCU CBO Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, HBCU Climate Change Consortium and National Black Environmental Justice Network.
  • Develop and provide training to internal users on geospatial/big data management and other operational issues.
  • Coordinate GIS data sharing and storage for external partners of the Bullard Center
  • Maintain current knowledge of enterprise GIS technologies and developments in the field through relevant training, literature review and attendance at conferences and symposia.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

$80,870.19-$

Education

Master’s in Geography, Urban Planning, Epidemiology, Environmental Science, or related fields.

Required Licensing/Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge
  • Strong research knowledge in environmental and climate justice
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Technical writing and research publication experience
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and computational skills are a plus
  • An interest in policy impacts is a plus
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications

Work Experience Required

Interdisciplinary research experience at the nexus of environmental justice, transportation equity, climate change, food insecurity, and heat island effects, green space justice, and natural disasters.

Preferred
  • Requires five years of work experience in the GIS field and or related activities. Extensive knowledge of GIS software and technology and information services. Extensive knowledge of and proficient use of ESRI formatted geo-databases and remote sensing data.
  • Working knowledge of Python scripting and SQL for big database management.
  • Proficiency with full Esri software suite including ArcGIS Online and ESRI Server.
  • Experience publishing and maintaining ArcGIS web-based map services and applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate academic research into useable tools and metrics for decision-makers.
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups which include community groups, elected officials, policymakers, non-profit groups, etc.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and/or community-based research projects.
