Under the general supervision of the hiring manager, the Senior Research Scientist II, working within the Center for Biomedical and Health Research (CBMHR), conducts advanced pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology, and cancer genetics studies. This role is responsible for both in vitro studies using cell lines and tissues and in vivo studies using animal models. The Sr. Research Scientist II also supports the research and development activities of the university’s large center grants, including the NIH U54 RCMI-CBMHR Center, CPRIT CCPF Center, and the iD3 Center, assists PIs in grant and manuscript preparation, presents research at local, national, and international meetings, and provides support in laboratory maintenance.

Duties Summary
  • Conduct in vitro pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology, and cancer genetics studies using cell lines, tissues, and other laboratory models.
  • Conduct in vivo pharmacology and cancer genetics studies using animal models, including mice and/or rats.
  • Maintain accurate records and management of CBMHR instruments, research activities, equipment inventories, and compliance activities, developing and implementing documentation frameworks as needed.
  • Support the research and development activities of large center grants, including the NIH U54 RCMI-CBMHR Center, CPRIT CCPF Center, and the iD3 Center.
  • Serve as a senior scientific resource to grant leadership, faculty investigators, and research staff, providing expert consultation on experimental design, method development, data analysis, and grant preparation.
  • Assist PIs in preparing progress reports, grant deliverables, and publications, ensuring scientific accuracy and timely submission.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at local, national, and international conferences, and support efforts to secure external funding.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and supervision to undergraduate and graduate students, technical staff, and junior scientists in research techniques and laboratory best practices. Identify opportunities for technological advancement, development of new service areas, and process improvements within the laboratory and center.
  • Perform administrative, operational, and scientific duties necessary for the success of the laboratory and research projects.
  • This includes but is not limited to lab supply procurement, tracking and ensuring supplies for various types of experimental procedures, and lab procedures. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Required

Master’s degree or higher in a biomedical science-related field

  • Advanced molecular cloning, cell culture, and animal research techniques, including in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology, and cancer genetics studies.
  • Experimental design, method development, and data analysis for biomedical research Principles of pharmacology, molecular signaling, and cancer biology
  • Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments
  • Laboratory safety, compliance, and documentation practices
