Position: Staff Nurse I (Health Services)

Overview

Position Summary: The Staff Nurse I provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support to UT Health Services and Employee Health, working closely with medical providers to assess patient needs and develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care. This role blends direct patient care with operational oversight, including nurse triage, minor wound care, injections, and venipuncture, while also managing EPIC Inbasket communications, employee and occupational health clearances, and responding to phone and email inquiries.

The Staff Nurse I plays an active role in maintaining safe and efficient clinical operations by monitoring emergency supplies, managing EPIC Lot Manager processes, and supporting and mentoring unlicensed clinical staff. Working as part of a collaborative team of fewer than 20 members, this position requires strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and adaptability, along with a willingness to pursue ongoing training to support evolving procedures and workflows across both UT Health Services and Employee Health.

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Assists doctors in the delivery of patient care to ensure quality service.
  • Ensures efficient operation of the clinic or unit by proper scheduling and planning for optimum use of staff and facilities.
  • Assists doctors with routine office/surgical procedures performed under anesthesia, interviews new patients, takes blood pressure readings, records vital statistics, and administers drugs and treatment.
  • Provides patient education and counseling on pre-op and post-op care.
  • Responds to emergency situations and may administer CPR and/or other first aid measures.
  • Coordinates upkeep of patient charts, types reports, makes telephone calls, and schedules appointments for patient visits and payment collection.
  • Schedules operations at hospitals including admissions procedures, use of operating room, x-rays, lab requirements, and special tests for patients.
  • Prepares purchase requisitions of new equipment and follows up on delivery. Stocks and maintains necessary medical and clerical supplies for the clinic. Keeps equipment in sterile and working order for physicians.
  • May provide direction to other clinical personnel to ensure proper procedures are followed.
  • Demonstrates various procedures and techniques to LVNs to ensure delivery of proper patient care.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills
  • Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) preferred
Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing school, or Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing school, or diploma nurses.

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code 51.215 and Texas Government Code; to the extent that a position requires access to critical infrastructure, the employee may be subject to additional vetting as defined by law. Residency is required: employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
