Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN Med/Surg position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, operating at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN PRN Med/Surg provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records.
The RN PRN Med/Surg delivers direct patient care effectively and efficiently, including patients with varied and complex needs. This role communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN PRN Med/Surg demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
This position assumes leadership roles with progressive responsibility including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and potentially contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Responsibilities- Provide professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, including comprehensive nursing assessments, assistance with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records.
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to coordinate and maintain high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Demonstrate clinical competence in care delivery, technology use, medication administration, procedures, and emergency management; advocate for patients and families to protect patient rights.
- Assume leadership roles with progressive responsibilities, including participation in or leadership of unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives.
- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated under Certifications, Licenses and Registrations.
- Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
- RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
- BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association.
- Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification.
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as defined in orientation and annual competency checklists.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially regarding safety.
- Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and co-workers with a customer service focus.
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional teams, patients and families.
- Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficient time management and ongoing professional contributions per Clinical Career Path guidance.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook.
- Utilizes therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
- Supports teamwork by monitoring unit acuity, offering assistance, and fostering healthy work relationships; seeks and provides guidance to improve patient outcomes.
- Provides staff education and coaching; may include preceptorship and peer-to-peer accountability toward improving department engagement scores.
- Follows patient- and family-centered care standards; conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains medical records.
- Develops, updates, and communicates the plan of care, including discharge planning, in partnership with the patient, family, and interprofessional team; prioritizes care based on patient needs and preferences; advocates for patients and families.
- Provides patient teaching based on learning needs and evaluates comprehension; adjusts teaching methods accordingly.
