Overview
Spring Branch Independent School District seeks a Nurse responsible for the implementation and management of the school health program which serves learners through preventive care, health education, and a healthy school environment.
Responsibilities- Nursing Services: Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols to all students according to district policy. Serve as health advocate for students. Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases when parents or emergency contacts cannot be reached. Coordinate management system to administer medications to students inister medications according to district policy and procedures.
Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary. Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings. - Instruction: Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups. Educate faculty and staff as needed on health-related topics. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students. Develop a health management plan and provide clinical case management for students who are medically fragile and/or have specialized health care needs.
- Consultation: Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community. Serve as a primary member of the school crisis intervention team and provide health counseling for students, parents and staff. Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed. Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees and develop Individual Health Plans.
Collaborate with other professionals regarding health-related IEP items. Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with principal permission. Communicate regularly with principal, health services coordinator, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services and other staff regarding health services issues. - Administration: Review and evaluate immunization records. Promote a healthful and safe environment by managing district/state immunization and communicable disease programs. Provide support and supervision to assigned LVN(s) and nurse assistants. Determine and provide the training and monitoring of all unlicensed school personnel providing direct health care services to students. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports and health records for all students.
Requisition supplies and equipment to maintain clinic inventory. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws and board rules in health services. Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal. Comply with district and campus routines and regulations. Support the district mission, participate in campus improvement planning, school-based activities, and district staff development, and lead health program goals.
Implement health screening programs and establish a reporting system using current technology for health data collection. - Professional Development: Maintain CPR certification, vision and hearing screening, and health screener credentials. Model professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
- Other: Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program. Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nursing. Must be CPR certified.
- Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to implement policies and procedures.
- Experience: Experience in community health or school nursing.
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
- Physical Demands: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
- Environmental Demands: Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
