Charge RN II – PACU (Full Time Days)
At Houston Methodist, the Charge Nurse position is a licensed professional Registered Nurse (RN) who, as an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. This role creates an environment for the management and delivery of safe patient care, serves as a role model and coach to department personnel, and assists in developing their skills and knowledge.
The Charge Nurse provides nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts assessments, assists with exams and treatments, and maintains medical records while coaching and mentoring staff in clinical and professional practice.
- Lead unit and shared governance activities, assess unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, serve as a clinical resource for unit and hospital staff, and coordinate unit- and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.
- Foster staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, and supporting organizational goals.
- Role model inter‑professional communication, assist staff with stress management, and drive departmental scores for turnover/retention on the unit‑based scorecard.
- Coach staff in effective communication, include patients and families in care planning, and contribute to performance reviews as appropriate.
- Provide oversight for students, new employees, and preceptors; identify and resolve conflicts with patients, families, physicians, and the inter‑professional team.
- Lead patient and family‑centered care standards per Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice, mentor others about specialty populations, audit plans of care, and practice with cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
- Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff through leader rounding; ensure effective collaboration with other departments regarding patient process issues.
- Drive department service standards to improve patient satisfaction scores on the unit‑based scorecard through model leadership and accountability.
- Model standards of care, participate in continuous improvement activities, promote situational awareness, and assist with audits.
- Coordinate nursing care throughout the shift taking into account patient acuity, staff skill level, and safety to meet duties; facilitate patient flow and work closely with beds management and rapid response teams.
- Participate in quality and safety initiatives, use teachable moments, and collaborate with the inter‑professional team to improve unit and hospital scorecard results.
- Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets by timely documentation, reducing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and minimizing overtime while managing productivity per staffing grid.
- Foster innovation by leading and/or participating in unit projects, incorporate evidence‑based practices into shared governance, and adapt to unexpected changes.
- Expand nursing knowledge, coach staff to grow in abilities, serve as a clinical resource, and develop educational resources to improve quality and professional practice.
- Education
:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program and approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s). - Work Experience
: 24 months of clinical nursing experience with demonstrated progressive leadership skills. - Licenses and Certifications – Required
:- RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure (Compact Licensure) – obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency.
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
- Licenses and Certifications – Preferred
:- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – if pediatric care within 4 months.
- Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
- Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies through ongoing assessments and performance evaluations.
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English relevant to patient or employee safety.
