Overview

The Surgical Oncology Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center offers seven specialties:
Acute Care Surgical Oncology & General Surgery, Endocrine surgery, Gastric-peritoneal surface surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, Melanoma surgery, Pediatric surgery, and Sarcoma surgery. Providers assess, plan treatment, and provide surgical services with goals to improve survival, shorten recovery, maximize quality of life, and minimize treatment-related side effects.

Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) – Surgical Oncology Operating Room (OR) – INPATIENT
.

The ideal candidate will have prior Operating Room experience as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

Salary Range: Minimum $ – Midpoint $ – Maximum $

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care: Collaborate with the physician and clinical team to manage patients in one or multiple areas of the department (GI, Melanoma, Sarcoma, Endocrine, Port Clinic, Breast Cancer). Demonstrate population-based competencies across the continuum of care. Perform history and physical assessments, collaborate with the physician to prescribe tests and interpret results, and provide appropriate treatment. Optimize practice autonomy within professional scope while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team in assigned areas.

  • Outpatient Clinic APP – Manage new patients, follow-up patients, post-op patients, survivorship and surveillance patients in collaboration with the physician and clinic team.
  • Operating Room – With OR privileges and responsibilities, assist in surgery as allowed by certification and scope. Perform pre-operative assessments, evaluate immediate post-operative status, interpret tests, and prescribe appropriate treatment.
  • Inpatient Care – Manage patients during hospitalization and post-surgery in collaboration with the clinical team. Participate in evaluation and management of patients referred for surgical consults.

Medical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of care of Surgical Oncology patients. Develop proficiency in skills necessary for care of patients in the practice area. Engage in ongoing learning opportunities and share knowledge with staff and trainees. Promote the institution’s discovery/research efforts to improve patient outcomes.

Professionalism

Demonstrate commitment to collaborative professional relationships with physicians and all health care team members. Abide by professional regulatory and institutional guidelines for practice, documentation, professional charges, and professional conduct. Demonstrate commitment to professional development.

Education

Required: Master's Degree from an Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Degree may be waived for applicants recognized as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
