Overview
The primary purpose of this Advanced Practice Nurse (APP) position is to provide quality patient care in relation to the patient’s prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development, and other identified needs. The APP will work closely with department faculty physicians to support both outpatient and inpatient clinical practices across the Endocrinology and Endocrinology‑Diabetes services.

Provide Direct Medical Skills Within Scope of Practice
- Primary responsibility for working with department faculty physicians to cover outpatient and inpatient clinical practice for Endocrinology and Endocrinology‑Diabetes services.
- Manage endocrine disorders, chemotherapy agent effects, glucose needs, lipid control, multiple‑dose insulin and insulin pumps.
- Initiate monthly assignments without supervision; handle telephone conversations, written and verbal communication, and documentation.
- Attend Endocrinology Multidisciplinary Conference weekly, Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds, and triage of new patients and consultations.
- Outpatient Services:
Attend clinic with physician; conduct preliminary assessments, dictate notes, assist with paperwork, retrieve and review labs, facilitate communication between clinic visits. - Inpatient Services:
Attend inpatient rounds, perform consultations and follow‑ups, perform in‑patient follow‑up of patients previously seen by faculty physicians. - New Patient and Consultations Triage and Evaluation:
Triage new patient acceptance, triage internal consultations, direct scheduling and attend urgent clinics as needed. - Provide quality patient care:
Order routine tests, access biopsy and laboratory reports, order medications and treatments within authorized prescriptive authority, perform routine admission procedures, interview patients for symptoms and side‑effects, calculate drug doses, chart notes, and schedule and perform delegated medical procedures. - EDUCATION/RESEARCH/
COLLABORATION:
Provide patient and trainee education, participate in clinical protocol clinical tasks, commit to collaborative relationships, deliver education to patients and families, participate in trainee education, and collaborate on clinical research protocols.
- Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate Nursing Practice. Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
- No required work experience.
- Required written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse; upon hire. Additional required authorizations include prescriptive authority, Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and other certifications consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
- APA Advanced Practice Registered Nurse; upon hire.
- ACNP, ACNPC, AGACNP, AGNP, ACPNP, ANP, FNP, GNP, PNP, PMHNP, WHNP, APNPAdv Pract Nurse/Prescriptive; upon hire.
- Basic Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support; upon hire.
