SummaryThe Registered Nurse-Wound Care is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising the management of patients/residents with acute and chronic wounds across clinical practice settings.
Qualifications- English Language Proficiency – proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE).
- Or individual attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who has completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree in Nursing may have an opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program.
- Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
- Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing who possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation accepted by VA (e.g., ICD).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth (or District of Columbia).
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade on a temporary appointment while pursuing licensure.
- Preferred Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of medical/surgical experience and 1 year of wound/ostomy/continence experience preferred; WOCN certification preferred. - Physical Requirements:
Moderate lifting (15‑44 lb), Moderate carrying (15‑44 lb), Straight pulling (3 hrs), Pulling hand over hand (3 hrs), Pushing (3 hrs), Reaching above shoulder, Use of fingers (both hands required), Walking (6 hrs), Standing (6 hrs) (both legs required).
- Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversee licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate.
- Identify and institute preventive and treatment measures and monitor results of wound care delivered.
- Provide colleagues with tools to improve wound care knowledge, assessment, and management skills.
- Assist in directing nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement outcomes consultation.
- Analyze resources available to staff, identify risk areas (quality metrics, supplies, equipment, data) to foster a safe, supportive environment for learning and professional development.
- Evaluate effectiveness of resources, equipment, supplies, and specialty advanced therapies currently in use and being considered for future use for wound assessment and management (including ostomy and continence care).
- Evaluate practice continually based on best evidence.
- Provide peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement.
- Foster a safe and supportive environment conducive to professional development of healthcare professionals.
- Support colleagues through wound care knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care.
- Share educational findings, experiences and ideas with peers.
- Question clinical practices to provide evidence-based care.
- Participate in activities and strategies to sustain an evidence-based practice culture.
