The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is a patient care provider who performs a variety of nursing functions and closely assesses patients for changes in medical or nursing status under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Medical Director. The LVN provides care to adults with varying degrees of acquired brain injury (ABI) who may or may not have sustained other injuries.
The LVN is responsible for supervision and documentation of the patients' medical and nursing needs until discharge. Duties include observing and documenting patients' behavior, modeling appropriate behavior, interacting with patients, providing training to staff, ensuring patient safety, and reinforcing treatment plans and Moody Neuro policies. The LVN communicates with the Registered Nurse, Medical Director, Program Director, and families regarding patients’ medical care, provides direct billable education to patients on specific medical needs, and offers health‑related educational support to clinical and therapeutic assistants as required by CARF, CRS, and HHSC.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Specified nursing services as needed by Moody Neuro patients.
- Assist in emergency situations such as fire alarm and drill procedures, and provide first aid treatment in case of illness or injury, adhering to triage procedures.
- Educate all staff on the policies and procedures related to all health and safety issues and provide/maintain all documentation of related education.
- Read, understand, and ensure compliance with CARF, HHSC, CRS, and Moody Neuro regulations related to health and safety.
- Monitor patient self‑administration of medications and document ability to perform this function.
- Provide documentation of observation of patient responses as needed.
- Provide patient education in the individual or group setting weekly.
- Serve as a role model at all times for the patients and residential staff.
- Attend in‑services, workshops, staff meetings, and seminars, as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality of both patient and staff issues.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for patients and staff.
- Admission/discharge duties in accordance with Moody Neuro organizational policies, CARF, and other accrediting/licensing bodies.
- Assist in the training of residential staff as directed by the Medical Director or Program Director.
- Assure medical documentation is in accordance with licensing agencies and that all co‑signatures required by RN are completed.
- Schedule and administer initial TB Test with new employees and patients, document results and administer annually.
- Conduct new hire drug screenings or incident follow‑up drug screenings as instructed by the Program Director.
- Schedule outside medical appointments assigned by the Medical Director while patients are admitted to Moody Neuro.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Maintain medical documentation, including medication monitoring sheets, incident reports, and medical consults.
- Act as a liaison between the Registered Nurse, Medical Director, Program Director, and the staff related to health and nursing issues.
- Maintain nursing, health, and safety procedures according to Moody Neuro policies.
- Maintain appropriate on‑call records for timecard.
- Current Texas state license as an LVN.
- Knowledge of TBI and related syndromes.
- Ability to work well with other people in a clinical setting.
- Ability to stimulate and motivate persons with problems in motivation.
- Knowledge of social customs and responsibilities.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility, innovation, and good judgment.
- Ability to receive and follow instructions accurately.
- Knowledge of philosophical and ethical considerations in rehabilitation practice.
- Ability to pass CPR certification requirements.
- Ability to communicate accurate and pertinent information through documentation.
- Ability to execute emergency procedures with regard to fire drills, emergency evacuation, and triage.
