Position Summary

Manages communications initiatives that highlight the organization and its key messages. This role is responsible for developing and executing a variety of external messaging with particular emphasis on media relations. The person in this role will help Port Houston enhance brand visibility, shape public perception, and strengthen relationships with local, national, and international media outlets.

Key Responsibilities /Duties
  • Prepare and communicate organizational statements and talking points on a variety of topics.
  • Develops and executes strategic communications and public relations initiatives that enhance the Port Houston’s reputation, transparency, and stakeholder trust.
  • Brainstorm, design, and execute media relations strategies based on organizational and departmental goals.
  • Reviews materials intended for public release to ensure they represent the best interest of Port Houston and are consistent with public relations objectives and policies.
  • Routinely engage with and maintain positive relationships with media, stakeholders, and subject matter experts.
  • Field and respond to media inquiries and act as day-to-day liaison with the media when needed.
  • Write and otherwise prepare media kits, talking points, press releases, and responses to media inquiries that provide clear, consistent, and accurate messaging concerning the Port’s activities and operations.
  • Manage press conferences and photo opportunities.
  • Assist with Speakers Bureau and speech preparation, including writing speeches and supporting various speech-giving staff as they represent Port Houston.
  • Provide reporting on activities as requested.
  • Represent the brand in all communications.
  • Act as primary media contact when necessary in the event of incidents or emergencies.
  • Act as a good steward of Port Houston resources.
  • Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you).
  • Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related major from a four year public or accredited private academic institution required
  • 6+ years of related public relations experience required
